One companv. it is stated, has invented a secret pel
let This pellet is put In the ground with every seedlinir.
The pellet dissolves slowly. It releases fertilizers and other
plant foods needed by the small trees. By using : this pel
let thev have increased the (trowth of seedhntts by 43 per
cent the first year, 56 per cent the second year and yet
have spent no 'more than $10 per acre.
It is estimated that throtijrh the use of fertilizers, pro-i
durine companies may be able to reduce the cycle of:
jrrowth bv 25 per cent or maybe more. We now figure a,
cvcle of at least 70 years In the wet coastal region, rans;iii?j
upward to 100 and 125 years in the drier Cascade regions.
That period is the length of time it takes to grow a new
tree to commercial size on a logged off area.
Trees Treated As Crop
Comparatively recently we formed a new concept re
garding our forests. Trees now are accepted and treated
as an agricultural crop. Where corn grows as a crop every
vear. trees have a growing cycle of much longer duration.
