Prices Probe Set,
States Porter
Elir.ENE (AP) Rep. Charles
O. Porter (D-Ore) said today the
Justice department informed him
it had opayied a preliminary inves
tigation of recent bread price
increases in Western Oregon.
Porter said he told Ally. Gen.
William P. Rogers in a letter Aug.
20, a few days after the latest
bread price increase became ef
fective: "A similar story has been
appearing in Pacific Coast news
pjpers almost annually for at
least six years. I have com
plained to the Department of Jus
tice about the apparent conspi
ricv of these price rises previ
ously. I am complaining ajain.
"It does seem to me that there
Is a collusive agreement to raise
the price of bread and that this
is actionable under the anti-trust
laws."
Assistant Ally. Hen. Victor R
Jensen of the justice department
?nli-trust division replied that the
preliminary investigation was
slarted to determine whether a
further investigation would be
necessary.
Porter said he hoped the pre
liminary investigation would lead
to a "long overdue complete in
vestigation of these apparently
collusive agreements between
cempetitnrs in the commercial
bakery business, especially in the
rortland-Kugene areas of Western
Oregon."
