It wasn't a very dignified posi
tion or the manager of the North
west League Wenatchee Chiefs to
be in ana besides, the dirt around
homeplate was not only dusty, it
was hard as well.
Gritting his teeth determinedly,
Wenatchee manager Bert Haas
picked himself up from where he
had fallen after missing a swing,
dusted himself off and promptly
Sowered one out of the park to
ring the Chiefs Into a 6-6 ninth
inning tie with Eugene's Emer
alds. With their manager's disnitv
properly restored, the Chiefs then
brought in another ninth-inning run
to wnip tne emeralds, 7-6,
Haas put himself into the game
as a pinchhitter with his team
down, 6-3. two men on and one
out. The winning tally came when
Elio Toboso followed the portly
Heas with a triple and scooted
home on a wild pitch.
In other gamea Wednesday night,
Yakima kept a tight grip on its
three-game edge over the second
place Chiefs by bouncing Tri-City,
ll-l, and Lewiston whitewashed
Salem, 1-0.
Harry Williams brought Tri
City's Braves back into the ball
gam with a grandslam homer in
the fourth which tied the contest,
4 4. Yakima had taken the lead
with two runs in both the second
and third stanzas.
But the tied score lasted quick.
In th fifth, th Bears put together
three walks, a double by Herman
Lewis, a sacrifice fly and Rick
Rust's two-run homer to score five
runs.
Th gam drew 1,117 fans for a
season total at Yakima of 58,614
which topped last year's total fig
ure by some 500.
Akins Needs
lOth-Round
KOToWin
CHICAGO (AP) Welterweight
champion Virgil Akins saved face
!aM. night with a 10th-round tech
nical knockout of hardy Charlie
(Tombstone) Smith.
He didn't have much face to
save.
Smith, a gangling 4-1 underdog,
opened cuts at the corner of Ak
ins' eyes. By the 10th of the na
tionally televised show, the
champ's face was a crimson mask.
The end came suddenly for
Smith, eighth-ranking contender
from Los Angeles. Tombstone had
a big lead on all official cards as
he christened the rusty Akiqs with
long, popping iefts and digging
rights.
In the loth round, Akins charged
Smith furiously at the bell and
pummeled him with rights and
lefts.
A left hook decked Tombstone
for an eight count. He arose fog
bound. Then Akins drove him into a
corner. He landed 16 rights and
lefts without Tombstone lighting
back. Referee Frank Sikora
stopped it at 1:18.
The crowd of 862 booed and
threw some trash into the ring.
"I'll admit I was a little dazed."
said Tombstone afterwards. "But
they shouldn't have stopped it. I
knew all I had to do was last it
out to win. I think I could have
done it."
