Blamed For Riot
PRINCE RUPERT, B. C. (AP)
A riot here last week in which
an estimated 1000 persons took
part, was caused by racial dis
crimination against the local In
dian population, a fisherman's un
ion claimed this week in a letter to
British Columbia government of'
ficials.
The union called for a full scale
investigation into the disturbance
particularly into treatment of In
dians by Royal Canadian Mounted
Police and by local business.
Failure to investigate the mat
ter the union said, could result
in future disturbances "on a more
massive scale.
The riot occurred the night of
Aug. 3 when police arrested a man
and woman, who officers said had
been fighting in the street.
Bystanders, many of whom
were Indians objected to the ar
rest and the crowd soon grew
into a howling, fist-waving mob
which demonstrated for more than
tnree hours.
It was finally stopped ny the
town s entire force of policemen
and firemen, using tear gas and
fire hoses.
Some 40 persons were arrested
and charged with inciting or tat
uig part in a riot.
