Air Of Optimism Sweeping Over Business Scene, With Firm Statistical Backing
By WILLIAM FERRIS
AP Buiintti Ntwt Writer
NEW YORK (AP)-An air of
optimism is sweeping over the
business scene. It has firm sta
tistical backing. Business is im
proving, and is doing so at a
time of year when it ordinarily
does not. ,

Dulles Visiting ,
Konrad Adenauer
BONN, Germany (AP) Stand
ing together under an umbrella in 1
a rain storm, U. S. Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles and
West German Chancellor Konrad
Adenauer gave a ceerful demon
stration Saturday of German
American solidarity.
The 82-year-old chancellor
braved the rain to make the protocol-breaking
gesture of meeting
Dulles at the airport when he ar
rived here for consultation on the
Middle East.
Wearing a raincoat and holding
a big umbrella when the presi
dential plane Columbine landed,
Adenauer walked forward to wel
come Dulles and both stood close
together under it while they ex
changed cheerful greetings.
Officials said Adenauer wanted
by his personal welcome to kill
talk of coolness between Bonn and
Washington over the American
handling of the Middle East crisis.
are not difficult to recognize, but
often they are difficult to accept.
This certainly was true last sum
mer. The obviously deepening eco
nomic deterioration at that time
was rejected by people condi
tioned to uninterrupted expan
sion. A similar situation, but in re
verse, undoubtedly exists to some
extent now. The tendency of many
will be lo reject this week's com
ments of Dr. Gabriel Hauge. eco
nomic adviser to President Eisen
hower. Dr. Hauge said:
Sees Rtctssion End
"In my opinion the recession Is
ended. I think we're on our way
to a good period of rising activ
ity." Additional statistical informa
tion arose this week to support
Dr. Hauge's position. Moreover,
j government action indicated an
; acceleration of the upward trend
regardless of the outcome of the
United Nations summit confer
ence on the Middle East.
Various government agencies
are pouring out money at a rate
to give a banker apoplexy. Defense
contracts mount each week and
the Senate Appropriations Com
mittee this week increased the
amount President Eisenhower has
requested for defense in the next
12 months.
Farmers will get nearly l'i bil
lion dollars from the government
this year, the largest sum on rec
ord, partly for retiring crop land.

F.dar.l Deficit High
The federal deficit in the fiscal
year just ended was larger than
expected while Ihe outlook for the
current fiscal year, just started, is
such that Treasury Secretary An
