The Myrtle Creek American Le
gion junior baseball team did the
job Sunday afternoon.
It came up with a win over the
Springfield club in a District One
twin bill at Glendale. That one
win gave the Roscburg juniors the
1958 district title.
Winelrout Ford traded shutouts
with Springfield. Gene Morrison
won the opener 2 0 and Spring
field's Rich Downs the nightcap 3-0.
Bill George's nine won the first
game early, by bringing in their
runs in the second inning.
Shortstop Rod Trask began the
inning when he was hit by pitcher
Dovle Batev. Catcher Kd Cearly
then lined a shot to left where
Simmic Walker attempted to make
a shoestring catch. But tne nan
travelled through him and Trask
continued to third and Cearly to
second. Trask scored on Morrison's
ground out and Cearly advanced to
third. Wes Davidson came through
with a single to center and that
was the scoring in the inning and
in the game.
Winetrout had two other hits off
Batcv, a double by Jack Ball in
the fifth and a single by Trask in
the sixth inning.
Springfield Threatens
Springfield threatened in the
first and in the sixth, but each
time Morrison worked himself out
of trouble

grabbed another series victory by
sweeping a double!ader Sunday
and moved within five games of
the first division in the Pacific
Coast League.
Vancouver meanwhile moved
back into the league lead, 9' a
games ahead of Portland, - by
downing Phoenix 4-0 while San
Diego was falling into second
place after losing a twin bill to
Salt Lake City 8-5 and 19-5.
And the Sacramento Solons
eased their way out of a month
long stay in the cellar by beating
Spokane 6-4 .while Portland pushed
Seattle to the bottom with a dual
victory, 9-4 and 4-3.

in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Lockwood Motors Ameri
can Legion junior baseball team
draws a bye in the first round of
the Oregon Stele Legion play
offs. The Roitburg club will
meet the winner of the North
Bend-Klamath Falls tub Area

put the Yakima Bears of the
Northwest League into a Vi game
league lead. But this doesn't real
ly mean too much. They were
ahead the same number of games
two weeks ago, then fumbled and
slipped back for a brief stay in

game 10-2 and being shutout

Club In Split
The Drain Black Sox split with
the Seattle Cheney Studs in pair
of games played over th week
end. The Black Sox downed the Se
attle club 7-8 Saturday night, and
blew a three-run lead in the last
inning of the game Sunday after
noon to lose 8-7.
In the game Saturday, Don Lane
went eight plus innings before re
ceiving help from Leroy Hahn in
the ninth. Norm Welch, former
l.inficld College standout and cur
rent Clatskanie High School base
ball and football mentor, was the
top hitler for the Sox. Welch col
lected 3-4 including a triple and
ended the evening with four RBI's.

In this game, Drain tied the ball
game at 2-2 in the second and then
led throughout the remainder of

once again in relief.
The Studs led in this game 4-1
in the fifth, when Jerry Bartow.
WSC southpaw chucker, belted a
three-run homer to tie the ball
game. From that point, the Black
Sox went into a three-run lead go
ing into the top of the ninth.
In the ninth, the Studs used a
walk, three singles and a Drain
error to cross the plate four times.
