HOW TO RAISE TREE
SEEDLINGS AT HOME
TOLD IN CIRCULAR
Growing forest tree seedlings in
a home nursery is a good deal
like growing garden plants for
transplanting, according to a new
circular published by the Oregon
State college extension service.
In general, though, you can buy
tree seedlings cheaper than you
can raise them, the circular ad
vises. Raising coniferous trees
from seed is an exacting job that
requires special knowledge and
some special equipment, it is point
ed nut.
However, growing seedlings at
home does help get tree seedlings
when they're not available else
where, and you can also grow tree
species not commonly offered for
sale. You can also use your home
grown trees for any purpose you
wish, the circular adds.
State laws in general forbid the
use of stale-federal nursery seed
lings for anything but reforesta
tion, Christmas trees, windbreaks,
and other conservation uses, it is
explained. State-federal seedlings
can't be planted within incorporate
ed city limits, resold with roots
attached, or used for ornamental
purposes.
The new circular, titled "Raising
Forest Tree Seedlings at Home,
tolls with tha help of many illustra
tions how to grow tree seedlings in
small nurseries. Suggestions are
given on location of the nursery,
icedbed preparation and planting
methods, seedling culture, and
transplanting and planting. Sources
of additional information are also
indicated.
The circular was compiled by
Charles R. Ross, OSC extension
farm forestry specialist, from in
formation furnished by a number
of private and government
sources. Oregon residents can get
a copy from their county extension
office, or from the OSC bulletin
clerk in Corvallis.

Tr Sttd ourct
Speaking of tree nurseries leads
to another closely related subject,
and that is tree seeds and sources
for same. This year appears to be
one in which you may he able In
collect your own seed. We'll know
more about this later.
From a recent Irip to tho Wal
lowas in eastern Oregon, and pans
of central Idaho, and back to the
Cascades, it is apparent that there
is a cone crop on tho number of
coniferous trees this year. Hmiulas
fir, ponderosa pine, western larch
and western while pine are all
bearing cones this year in suffici
ent quantities to be nolireable.
Even though certain observers
don't consider the quantity suffi
cient at medium and high eleva
tions to warrant commercial col
lecting, lower elevations in Doug
las County appear to have a fair
crop of Douglas fir.
Although it is still much too
parlv to do any collecting, it is.
none the less, not too enrly to lw
laying a few roiinn pinns. uy Aii-jinr
gust we certainly ourIU to be ahle

to what extent cones may l
wormy. Look: for anoher cone in
formation release in early August,
at which time directions for collect
ing will be given, should condi
tions look favorable.
