Troops Of U. S.

Jordan and help him in a battle
for survival against Syria and
Egypt.
The young monarch told a news
conference at Basman Palace h

Arranged For Concert
WASHINGTON (AP)-A special
concert arrangement of the Ore
gon State Song will be a featured
part of a coming program to honor
Herman I). Kenin, new inter
national president of the American
Federation of Musicians.
Kenin claims Portland, where he
headed the Musicians Union for 22
years, as his home town.
The concert arrangement of the
song, Land of the Empire Build
ers, will be premiered by a 50
piece American Federation of
Musicians symphonic orchestra.
Rep. Charles 0. Porter (D-Ore),
who recently distributed copies of
the state song to various musi
cians in the capital area, said the
AFM presentation July 23 would
he broadcast nationally with com
mentary by Kenin and other Ore
gonians. Members of (he capital's Oregon
Slate Society have been invited to
the program.

flung down to Republican Gov.
Mike Stepovich and said he would
file for the U. S. Senate "with no
strings attached."
Bartlett's surprise announce
ment, during a stopover at the
Juneau airport removed him from
possible head - on battle with
Slepovicn in Alaska's first elec
tion on the threshhold of state
hood. In Fairbanks Friday night, Bart
lett said he would withdraw from
the Senate race and file for gov
ernor if Stepovich tried for that
post.
However, in a telephone call
here Saturday to the Associated

of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Patterson
of this city, visited recently at the
Patterson home following a fishing
trip on the Rogue River. Christen
sen, now retired, was at one time
driver of the horse-drawn stage
which went from Eugene to Maple
ton. Mrs. R. G. Graham returned
home Wednesday evening from Mt.
Shasta, Calif., where she has been
visiting for the past several weeks
with her son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Ballenger.
The Balli-ngers are the parents of
a new baby girl, Sidney Mae, born
June 2.1,' and also have a son,
Craig, 23 months-old.
Mr. and Mrs. Ora Nicola and
sons, Edo';' and Richard, of Comp-
ton, Calif., have been tne nouse
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce
Roark and son, Bob. The two fam
ilies have enjoyed fishing and
camping at Diamond and Lemola
lakes and on the North Umpqua.

FLOOD OF CRAIN With Illinois and Missouri harvests now
at their peak, millions of bushels ot grain are moving on the
farms every 24 hours. Above, a fabulous flow of wheat, prt ot
the nation's largest harvest, since 1947 and second largest on
record, pours into a river barge at a Cargill, Inc., elevator at
St. Louis. The barge equals the capacity of more than 50 rail
road cars. The grain will go down the Mississippi to be

WILD WEST SHOW 18
BRUSSELS. (AP)-The altempt
jto bring a Wild West show and
a rodeo to Brussels in connection
with the World Fair resulted in
a financial disaster and a sched
uled wedding.
The rodeo company hacking the
j show was declared bankrupt this
I weekend by a Belgian judge. It
went broke after a long run of
I bad luck.
But mejnwhile the show star,
former U.S. rodeo champion Casey
Tibbs, Los Angeles, made plans
to get married here, after having
vaiply tried to fescue the show
and start it all over again.

decided to make the best of a
disastrous situation,"
The hnrie is Miss Cleo Ann Har
rington of Colman. S.D.., a brun
ette who was Miss Dakota in 1954.
She came along with the show.
"Cleo and I." said Casey, "met
four years ago and got engaged
about two years ago."
Sioux Indians and most of the
cowboys and cowgirls who were
brought here for the rodeo show
have now returned home or are
on their way back.
The show opened here June 18.
It closed .Tulv 13. Its tent broke
down before the opening. The show
had to he held in the open air
and suffered from bad wealher.

Closes Down: No Money
PORTLAND (AP) The Oregon
Moonwakh team, headed, by
school teacher Robert Boardwe.il
and his wife, has run out of money
and closed down its operations.
Mrs. B,:ardwell said the team
was unable to watch the passagn
of the Sputnik 111 rocket over the.
state early Saturday because some,
of the equipment is out of order
and no funds for repairs are avail
able. Boardwell said the team needs
$300 to repair its satellite watch
ing equipment.
