Cove Rocket Runs To 9,5 Dash Attain I.A GRANDE I Little Jim Purke tt tne again Saturday for new marki after raring through a 9 5-second time in the 100-yard dah here Friday. ! It was the second time in two week the Cove High School senior had been clocked at that ' lime, the fastest known in Oregon prep history. ' Saturday the 5-4, 130 pound senior competed in the Eastern ! Oregon Invitational. That race is J set for the F.astern Oregon College i track, where Puckett ran Friday. The Friday race was run under) near-perfect conditions. The sun was out, the temperature up to 87 degrees, and only a murmur of a hreeze was felt at the track. Puckett, a crew-cut blond, hurt led over the cinders just one tenlh of a second slower than the national prep record of 9.4, set by Jesse Owens in Chicago in 19.13. Owens went on to become one of the most famous Olympic Games stars in history. Three Wins Recorded In all, Puckett competed in three individual events in the an naul Tu-Valley Conference meet, and he won all three. He sandwiched in his 100-yard dash effort between a winning leap of 21 feet, ll'i inches in the broad jump and a time of 216 seconds in the 220-yard dash. Bulldogs Take Four-Way Meet The Sutherlin Bulldog track team gained five first places to Oakland's eight, but grabbed off more second and third places to move to a win in a four - way meet at Sutherlin. The Bulldogs piled up 17 1 1 -3 points while the second place team, Oakland, closed out the meet with 1311. The Riddle Irish were third with 70, and Glide fourth with 36'a.
