Employee Can't Be Fired For Opposing Merger
I Cousin Of Truman Wilt Command Ft. Liwii Post
SAN FRANCISCO .r An fin
p!ue cannot b fired for opposing
a merger favored by hit em
ployer, a National Lahor Relationi
Board examiner said here.
Examiner William E. Spencer
found the Snellstrom Lumber Co..
Eugene, Ore., guilty of an unfair
labor practice in firing Donald R.
Hedlind in February, 19iJ.
Spencer recommended an M.RB
order for the company to rehire
llrdhnd and pay him for any Iom
of waives in the intervening period.
Spencer, uho conducted a hear
ing at Eugene last November, laid
lleilhnd mat one of a number of
Snellstrom employei who owned
slock in Viking Plywood and Lum
ber, a Washington corporation.
Viking had owned half of the
Snellstrom Co. since 19.11. A Snell
itrom proposal for merger of the
firms led to the employes forming
rival committees, seeking proxies
for and again-.! merger. Spencer
said.
The merger proposal was de
feated in lt-'jfi, but company re
sentment against Hedlind s active
part in the matter led to his
firing, Spencer said
The examiner said the company
argued that Hedlind was belliger
ent and otten tardy, but Spencer
said he concluded the principal
reason for the discharge was man
agement's resentment.
