garden Iota of pep this summer,
A discussion was held concern-
can Sivo juu. n ,h !. ,;,, , lh. :, .,
If you know how. they are easy IT 'J an. , ,,1
to grow from exhioiiion dahlias
larne as dinner plates down to 2
liich pompoms.
But don't be in a hurry to plant
them. They should be planted
around .May 1. However, after a
mild winter such as we have had,
the middle of April is not too soon.
It is easy to get impatient when
Spring comes, but don't plant right
after the last frost. Dahlias plant
ed too earlv mature in hot weather
and produce poor flowers.
Dahlias are not fussy about toil,
provided it is deeply cultivated,
well-drained, and has plenty of
humus. They also need full sun.
Compost or other humus should be
dug into the dahlia bed every
year. Cultivate the surface soil
until plants are about a foot high.
After that, feeder roots are naar
the surface and likely to be dam
aged by cultivation.
Use mulch the rest of the sea
son to keep down weeds and con
serve moisture. If the soil is too
rich more failures occur than in
too-poor soil. In the bottom of the
hole where each tuber will be
planted, work a tablespoonful of
bone meal, and some sand in the
soil. When the plants are about S
inches high, work a small hand
ful of balanced plant food into the
top inch of soil in a ring a foot
or more out from the stalk. This
will be enough if the soil is rich.
Don't use high-nitrogen plant foods
or stems will be come soft and
plants will grow leaves at the ex
pense of flowers. 1'lnnt the bulbs
6 inches deep ( a little deeper if
hoil is light; and slightly less if
tuber is small and soil heavy.)
Cover with two inches of soil. The
large varieties need at least three
feel between plants, smaller ones
can be placed one to two feet
apart.
To top and disbud plants, pinch
nut the tops of Dahlia plants after
the second set of leaves have de
veloped. This makes the plant
branch to form four flower stalks
instead of one. If you want huge,
exhibition type of blooms, leave
the tip but go down the stem re
moving side buds, except for the
two bottom ones whitth are needed
to produce later flowers. Disbud
only large types; pompoms and
other small dahlias should have
masses of flowers instead of sin
gle specimens.
Stake your Dahlias well. It is a
good idea to place tho slake in
the ground at the time of plant
ing the tuber, so as not to injure
a root afler it has started grow
ing. As the plant grows add more
ties to the stake and plant. Dahl
ias, being soft - stemmed, break
easily. Therefore they should be
tied loosely. This careful staking
is necessary if your Dahlias are
to weather heavy winds and rain.
Dahlia leaves and flowers are
first choice of Dihrotica or green
cucumber bettle, the little bug that
, looks like a green lady bug. Other
pests of the dahlia are the tarnish
ed plant bug (an orange-brown
beetle) and Kuropean corn borer
(dead and dislorted hud tips,
flowers, and heaves, followed by
willing). A general garden spray
will, in most cases, keep these un
der control.
To avoid tuber rot. either in
storage or soon after planting, dig
plants as early as possible. Do not
injure the tubers, avoid freezing in
storage. Dust the tubers liberally
with a good garden dust before
storing for the winter. It is a good
idea to puff a lilth) of the dust
into the planting hole after the tu
bers are in place.
If masses of powdery mil. lew
develop ou leaves, it may be pos-
ime me pianis are not getlmg
enough sun. Next year plant in a
ed on plans for the club's earden
! plot at the fairgrounds.

Proposal Made To Add
10 Days To School Year
SALEM tl An addition of 10
days to the school year in Oregon
schools was proposed Friday.
A recommendation that the min
imum school year be increased
from 170 to 180 days was made to
the state Board of Education by
the professional committee for the
study of standards.
Objections were made by farm
groups, which said that a longer
school year would mean fewer
children to harvest crops.
Charles Schmidt, Salem school
superintendent, objected on be
half of strawberry and bean grow
ers. He said these groups feel the
school year already is too long.
The state Board of Education
will meet late next month to con
sider the recommendation
The advisory committee con-
sisis of 40 educators. The board
generally approves its recommendations.
