Champ' Bulldog Titlist For Third Straight Time; Roseburg's Simons Third In Heavyweight Jerry Perez of the Sutherlin Bull does walked through (our straight opponents Friday and Saturday at Corvallis to take top honors in the 115-pound class of the state high school wrestling tournament. After reaching the semifinal round Friday, Perei moved into the finals Saturday morning by edging Jim Snider of Benson by a close 1-0 decision. In the final against Larry Bender of Klamath Falls, Perez took a 6-3 decision and his third straight state wrestling title in a row. For the past two years Perez held down the 106-pound title, after fin ishing second three years ago in the 98-oound class. Perez turned up with a bad ton sil early rnday morning, but still came through with the wins. C.B. Simons of Koseburg nabbed a third place finish in the heavy weight division to be the only other Douglas County wrestler to place high on the list. Simons had a to tal of five matches during the two day meet, more than any other wrestler. Simons downed George Rettinger of West Linn 7-4 in his first bout of the day to move into the semifinal round of the consola tion bracket against Miller, Simons came through with a 4-1 decision to place third. A total of 208 wrestlers from 60 different high schools participated in the meet, with only 13 schools failing to land points. Raddatz was downed by Charles Marmelejo of Illinois Valley 6-0 in the semifinal round, then was edged by Bill Keller of Sweet Home 5-1. Only two other Douglas County wrestlers saw action Saturday, both from Sutherlin. Gordon Avery of the Bulldogs was dropped out of contention ear ly Saturday by taking it on the chin from Bob La com be of Grants Pass by a close 3-2 tally. Durrell Gigear moved into the semifinals of the consolation bracket Satur day morning by edging Don Dur den of Tillamook 5-0, but was drop ped out of the picture by Gilbert Roberts of Klamath Falls, who took a referee's decision over Gi gear. Russ Pinard, Don Green and Frank Walters, all of Roseburg, failed to land a place in Satur day's events, as did Kd Cearley of Myrtle Creek and Allan Barnes, Layton Ferguson and Tom Gilman of Sutherlin. The tourney was a double elimi nation affair, but if a wrestler was defeated in the early rounds he could commit until the man that downed him was defeated, or he lost his second bout. 6 The News-Review, Roseburg, Ore. Springfield, with a 7-2 record, must meet Eugene this Friday, who have a 6-3 mark, in one top game, while Roseburg, which is 5-3, must meet two teams, both of which are in the second division.
