Looks more and more as if the
Cincinnati, Ohioans got away with
about the tidiest hunk of college
basketball talent around when they
latched on to 19-year-old Oscar
Robertson from the Indianapolis,
lndianans a year and a half ago.
Oscar, the brilliant Bearcat, star
tled 'em with Cincinnati's fresh
man team last year, excited the
most blase New York critics with
a 56-point show a couple weeks
ago. . .and last night? Well, Rob
bie just about cinched the Bear
cats' first trip to the NCAA cham
pionships. The former Indianapolis high
school star scored 40 points as
Cincinnati whipped Bradley 94-77
to open a 1W game lead in the bat
tle for the Missouri Valley Confer
ence title. He scored 31 points in
the second half, 18 of them in a
five-minute, stretch after, Bradley,
made the score 58-55.
While Robertson was letting
himself go some of the nation's oth
er bigwigs were improving their
qualifications for post-season tour
neys. West Virginia, ranked No. 2 a
step behind Kansas State and a
step ahead of Cincinnati, clinched
the regular season title in the
Southern Conference, crushing
V.M1 104-58. The Mountaineers' Jer
ry West had 22 points as Freddie
Schaus' club made it 32 straight
conference victories and IS wins in
20 games this season.

Oscar Robertson came close,
but failed to overtake Seattle'
Elgin Baylor Wednesday night in
the race for major college bas
ketball's individual scoring lead.
Robertson scored 40 points for
Cincinnati in a 91-77 victory over
Bradley for a 19 game total of
633 points and a 33.3 average.
That left him just four-tenths of
a point behind according to the
NCAA Service Bureau. Baylor, idle
Wednesday night, has averaged
33.7 in 18 games on 607 points.
