CLENDALI
Tha Glendala Federated Garden
Club, at the request of the school
board, hai worked out plana for
landscaping and beautifying; the
high school grounds.
Club representative! met with
the school board last week to re
port on the work. They showed
plans, drawn to scale, of proposed
plantings, and brought estimated
cost schedules for purchase of nec
essary shrubs.
Two cost schedule sheets had
been prepared, one for shrubs of
a minimum size and one for larger
shrubs which would include and
match some available at a modest
fee from a local source. The esti
mated cost of the very small
shrubs was about 1125, and the es
timated cost for the larger ones
was $200.
The garden club committee,
which included Mrs. Homer Mart
in, chairman, Mrs. Howard Edson,
Mrs. Tom Patterson, Mrs. J. C.
Smith, and Mrs. Ed Harris, and
the board discussed the ideas pre
sented. The board accepted the plans
tentatively upon the provision that
tha garden club attempt to raise
money for their purchase. The
hoard expressed appreciation for
the careful and excellent work of
the committee but pointed out that
the school budget, pared to the
minimum last year before it was
passed, left no margin for pur
chase of beautification materials.
They promised th club every
cooperation, however, and Super
intendent Yoder said he believed
it could be arranged to have some
of the high school boys help with
the planting when purchase has
been made. School mechanical
drawing students had previously
cooperated with the club in pre
paring of the scale drawings of
the building.
The garden club decided to make
procurement of the landscaping
materials a community project,
since it does not have sufficient
(nnds of its own to do the work.
Camai Valley ii becoming quite
a forestry-minded community, with
many of ita residents engaged in
the practice of sound forest man
agement. Many of its residents
have discovered that forestry is a
worthwhile useful fact, not a fancy.
Since 1952. inroads have been
made in forestry in this beautiful
mile valley surrounded by moun
tain ranges. Perhaps it's th moun'
tain air that gives its forest own
ers that additional zip to plant
thousanda of trees and prune and
thin their growing stands of timber.
At least they are Retting the job
don in a workmanlike manner
and can be proud of their achieve
ments. Juan Schwendener was one of
the early ones to plant and culture
Christmas trees and salvage snags
on his tree farm. Unfortunately,
fire swept in and ravaged part of
the land. Even so. he is planning
to reforest this portion. Fire is
something that all landowners,
both large and umall, must often
contend with, as it respects the
riphts of no one
SEVERAL YEARS AGO Bob
Wheeler undertook a commercial
thinning on his place, which has
increased the growth rate of the
remaining trees on his tree farjn.
At present he's planning to prune
crop trees in his pre commercial
stands. He's also headed for a
planting project to bring unproduc
tive fields hack into the production
of trees.
Stewart Neeley and his able wife
are also among th earliest ones
to practice pruning, shearing and
stump culture of Christmas trees
on their woodland on eamas Moun
tain. For five or six years they
have been engaced in an industri
ous program of producing high
nualilv trees which thev market
nnnalle in a neighboring state.
Their tree farm is probably one
of the most ntitstanding of its tyne
in western Oregon and shows the
results of methodical and nersis
tent pood forest management.

It is making a public request for
help from organizations or individ
uals of the community. That help
could take the form of cash do
nations, or of shrubs or planting
materials.
Anyone wishing information
about the plans or the possibility
of making donations may contact
any member of the garden club
landscaping committee.
Included in the plans are low
shrubs to border the building and
evergreen trees to form a back
ground shield between the school
property and the industrial shops,
cold deck, etc., lying to the west
of the school.
The committee and the board
would like to take advantage of
one offer of a blue spruce for the
grounds, which was made by Mrs.
P. J. Miller, when the building
was first erected. It has not done
so .yet, however, because of the
cost of moving the tree which is
rather large and could not be
moved by an amateur. The com
mittee would accept financial aid
for moving the tree, which is not
listed above, or the work of mov
ing the tree by an person who
has had the experience to do the
job safely.

Public, Report
VANCOUVER, Wash i Sec
relary of Labor Mitchell Monday
said President Eisenhower will
ask Congress for legislation re
quiring unions to make their fi
nancial records public.
This is part of a "middle of the
road" labor program which the
President will propose, Mitchell
told a breakfast meeting arranged
by the Clark County Republican
Centrtl Committee.
The President's proposal will
call for penalties for unions which
refuse to disclose their records on
handling of union funds and pen
sion programs. These penalties
would include the loss of the un
ion's tax-free status and loss of
certification as bargaining agents
by the National Labor Kelations
Board, he said.
Another point of the program
will require union officers to be
elected every four years by secret
ballot, Mitchell said.
Discussing the nation's econom
ic outlook, Mitchell said he looked
for improvement by mid-summer.
Contributing factors, he said, will
be a 5'4-million-dolIar increase in
missle and defense spending, con
tinuation of the highway construc
tion program, and more home
construction.
Mitchell speaks Monday night
at a Republican $2S-a plate fund
raising dinner Hudson's Bay High
