Meanwhile, all library service
in the county has been suspended
until hept. X Library personnel
has gone on vacation. The suspen
sion was taken by the Douglas
County Library board in an ef
fort to meet a curtailed budget.

system has been the award of cer
tificates to IKJO children in the
county who have read eight or

the summer reading program.

SHEEP DOG TRIALS will be held again this year, with dogs working against a stop
watch penning sheep. The dog's judgement and assistance from owner will also be
considered.
Working Dogs To Compete
Wilh two of last year's winners
not expected to return to compe
tition this year, the sheep dog con
test should have a wide open field.
Neither Gordon Baker or Art Ry
chnrd, both of Yoncalla, have plan
ned to return to defend the hon
ors they won last year. About
10 entrants are expected. The con
test will be held Friday at 2 p.m.
in the grandstand.
The contest will show off the
abilities of working sheep dogs
from the county. A total of $210 in
prize money will be awarded to the
owners of the top six dogs. The win
ner will Ret StiO, the second place
entrant $50, and so on to $10 for
sixth place.
Sltcep for the event will be pro
vided by the Douglas Livestock
Market. All sheep used will be sim
ilar and none will be used twice.
Dogs will work with about five
sheep.
Dogs must fetch sheep from the
arena corner, run them through
a gate and pen them. The handler
may assist the dog in any way.
However this will be taken inio
account in judging, and excess as
sistance will count against the dog.
Judging will be based on judg
ment of the dog, obedience to sig
nals from the handler, time, and
assistance from the handler. There
will be three judges. There will
be a 10 minute time limit and a
two minute warning signal.

Attorney Ceneral Aide
Named By Gov. Holmes
SALEM, I Loren D. Hocks,
Salem lawyer, was appointed
Monday as assistant attorney gen
eral for the department of state.
A 1919 graduate of Willamette
Law School, he owns a cattle and
sheep ranch near here.
He succeeds Ralph Arnold, who
resigned. The appointment is ef
fective Sept. 3.
