Clown Must Double In Comedy, Rescue
nave Wood, one of the between-
I aits performers at the fair rodeo,
is one ot a small group 01 special
ises who penorm a contrasting
dual role.
This young man irom meisa,
Okla., puts on his outlandishly col
ored shirt and baggy pants to give
a show with a trained Dranina duii,
I so docile it could be walked through
! the crowd without stepping on a
jtoe. Then when the cowboys try
their hand at riding the madden

changing his clothes or his crowd

life or death lo a cowboy thrown
from one of the beasts.
I Clowns in rodeo work are not
'only specialises in comedy. They
are there to prevent trageay. They
are brave men first and funny
men only secondarily. The real
I reason for their presence in llu
, arena is no laughing matter.
The rodeo brahma is probably the
most murderous of all domestica
ted animals.
Though appearing ratlier docile
outside the arena they can be re
garded as in'.enlional killers with
their hugh, banaua-shaped horns,
their slashing hooves, their trem
endous, one-ton bulk. Despite their
size they are quick as panthers
and just as mean. They hold no
fear of a man mounted and will
attack a horso and ridu-r without
hesitation. For that reason mount
ed pick-up men can't be used tu
help rescue the contestants.
This is when the rare courage
of the rodeo clown steps in to as-
sist. Whether the rider has been in case of an emergency, and to
bucked off or whether he jumps (help him make good his escape,
off, he has to lely on his own leg The rodeo clown is a wonderful
power and the daring of the rodeo actor. He is usually uble to turn
clown. The clown must slay in; a near disaster into a big laugh
close enough to rescue the rider for the breathless crowd.
