CORRECTION FROM THE TOP
PIERRE, S.D. I South Da
kota's flying Gov. Joe Foss recent
ly corrected what was probably a
new high in confusion over iden

state of North Dakota.
Flying from Brookings to Pierre,
he overheard a jet pilot's radio
conversation about refueling "over
Fargo. South Dakota." When the
governor could stand it no longer
he cut into the pilot's radio fre
quency and informed the jet jock
ey, "that's Fargo, North Dakota."
"Sorry, sir," the pilot replied,
not knowing who was correcting
him, "I must have lost my head."

against the Bate Plywood opera
tions at Merlin, nine miles north
west of Grants Pass, was author
ized Sunday by members of Lo

Workers Union, according to Fred
Lynch, assistant business manag

Lynch said "the strike is not
yet in effect and we will negoliate
as long as possible before calling

The business agent said only
Bate plywood workers, numbering
between 250 and 300 men are
involved in the dispute at this
time and that the sawmill workers

declined to enumerate the griev

items" were under discussion, one
of them being an increase in
wages.
Lynch said the union row oper
ates under a contract with Bale
which will expire in April of 1958.
C. L. Lindquist, general manag
er of Bate- operations here, said
that he will not make any
statement until after a meeting
with labor representatives Monday
afternoon.
J. Herbert Bate of New York,
head of the Bate operations, has
been in Grants Pass since last
Thursday on what was described
as a routine business inspection
of his West Coast interests.
The Bate operations here in
clude an extensive sawmill and
cold process plywood plant at Mer
