Lebanon Woman Killed
As Car Coes Into Ditch
' BEND I Maria Wiens, 69,
Lebanon, was killed Monday when
a car in which she was riding
went out of control and rolled
over in a roadside ditch.
Her husband, Gearhart Wiens,
70, was taken lo a Bend hospital
with serious injuries.
The accident occurred on the
central Oregon plateau about 11
miles east of Brothers.
2-Year-Old Boy Drowns
In Drainage Ditch
HERMISTON, Ore. -Michael
Dallman, 2, drowned in
a drainage ditch three miles east
of Stanfield Monday.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dan Dallman of Stanfield.
Stale police say the tot had
been missing about an hour when
his body was found lodged against
a trap gate in the ditch by a
search party.

Howard Kushmore, who became
editor of Confidential in 1954, said
he received such instructions from
Kobert Harrison, the publisher of
Confidential and Whisper maga
zines. Kushmore was the first major
witness for the prosecution in its
trial of Confidential, Whisper and
Fred and Marjorie Meade, opera
tors of Hollywood Research, Inc.,
allegedly the source of Hollywood
stories for the magazines.
Kushmore took the stand after
Superior Judge Herbert V. Walker
ruled against actor Tab Hunter
in his effort lo avoid being called
as a witness.
This ruling apparently cleared
the way for the defense lo call
upwards of 100 Hollywood celeb
rities as witnesses.
Kushmore said that when he
first became editor of Confidential
he was told that the magazine's
policy was "to expose injustices
and corruption in government, in
ferior products and the antics of
show people that Hollywood col
umnisls would not print."
BOY DROWNS IN DITCH

old boy drowned in an irrigation
canal near his home at l.iuic

Monday.
The boy Mark Andrew Bol
lenbaugh fell into the canal
while at play with olher young
sters. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Uollenbaugh Jr., who have
three other children.

a signed statement she killed her

and kitchen knife. They shared a
Burlingame apartment.
The accused girl's attorney,
John Cost, said Dr. Walter Kap
paport, state director of mental
health, has been retained to give
her various psychiatric tests. Cost
said these will help determine her
plea to the murder charge.
Miss Soule said desire for a
$160 check of Miss Elvins' was
the motive for the slaying. The
Seattle girl was working as a sec
retary in the Bay area for the
summer.
Asphalt- Truck. Train
Collide; Three Killed
FORT WORTH, Tex. I An
asphalt truck and the Santa Ke
Railroad's Texas Chief collided
and burst into flames at a cross
ing near here yesterday, killing
three persons.
Hot asphalt from Ills Tarrant
County maintenance truck
spewed over a wide area. The lead
unit of the streamliner's four-unit
dicsel was engulfed in flames along
with the truck.
The victims were identified as
J. II. Estes of Temple, lex., engi
neer on the train; Grady Robin
son. Kort Worth, fireman; and
(irover C. Shivers, Fort Worth,
the truck driver.
Another county employe in the
truck. I.. (!. Ellis of Fort Worth,
was seriously injured.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. I A
flash flood swept through this
northwest Arkansas city early
Tuesday, forcing more than a
score of residents from their
homes. Some had to be evacu
ated by motorboat and one man
was rescued from a tree after
water swept him from a highway.
Water ran two to six feet deep
in the northern section of this city
of 8.000. There was considerable
damage lo businesses and several
cars were under water at the
peak of the flood.
The flood was caused by a
steady, torrential rain that fell
for almost 24 hours, beginning
Monday morning. It sent several
nearby creeks out of their banks.
Some people awoke after mid
night to find water in their bed
rooms. Two motorboals with the
fire department rescue unit were
used to evacuate 17 people from
their homes and they spent the
remainder of the night in the
Pope County courthouse.
The rain since Monday morn
ing was reported at about 9 inch
es by an unofficial gauge. The
offfcial measurement up to S p.m.
Monday was 3.94 inches.

curfew imposed on the Newry area.
The curfew was ordered in an ef

Cascade Mountain cliff Saturday.
Ruth Elaine Cass was hiking
with a woman companion, Mrs.
.Marvel Bulgin of Sedro Woolley,
in the 'mountains 55 miles east
of here when she compiained of
feeling dizzy and faint, Mrs. Bul
gin told authorities.
Mrs. Bulgin said Miss Cass then
collapsed and plunged over the
cliff before M rs. Bulgin could
reach to assist her, according to
Skagit County Undersheriff I r v
Jensen.
