WASHINGTON Congressional
agreement to reduce down pay
ments on FHA insured housing is
"a major legislative achievement"
which will give housing construc
tion and the Pacific Northwest's
slumping lumber industry a shot
in the arm.
This is the view of the National
Association of Home Builders of
the United States, which is hailing
the likely prospect of enactment
soon of a new housing bill. Both
House and Senate have passed dif
ferent versipns of a housing mea
sure, which must be compromised
before it can go to the White
House.
Both houses agreed to reduce the
down payment requirements, espe
cially for low and moderately
Ericed housing. Under the present
ousing act, the Federal Housing
Administration will guarantee a
mortgage with no less than 7 per
cent or $700 down on a $10,000
house, and 10 per cent or $100 down
on a $12,000.
Under the bills now pending,
both House and Senate reduced the
down payment requirement for a
$10,000 house to 3 per cent or $300.
For a $12,000 house, the House
chopped the requirement in half to
5 per cent or $600. The Senate went
even further, to make it 4.2 per
cent or $500. .

Cottage Grove Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Durham and
two children visited here last week
end. Durham is a former Yoncalla
resident, and is a preacher for the
Church of Christ, who travels and
does evengelism work.
Anne Lasswell, student at Wil
lamette University at Salem, and
June Warner, student at Southern
Oregon College of Education at
Ashland, are home for the summer
vacation.
Richard Brawn, who has been in
a Eugene hospital for several days,
has returned home. He cut the
end off a finger while working at
the Yoncalla Lumber Co.
Visits Daughter
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Morin and
family spent last week visiting rel
atives in Tillamook and Warrenton.
They returned home via West Linn
where they visited their daughter
and family. Mrs. Morin remained
in West Linn for a two weeks vis
it. Mrs. John Doran and family, and
David Williams, left last week for
Woodburn where David will visit
with Don Gregerson for a week.
The Doran family, who have been
visiting in llayhurst Valley, re
turned to their home at The Dalles.
Ronny Thornton, of Cresent City,
Calif., is visiting at the Clare
Thornton home in Hayhurst Valley
for a week.
School Children
Make Long Trip

entire school-age population of
Sawyers Bar, deep in the heart
of mountainous Siskiyou County,
moved in on San Francisco Mon
day to see life in the big city.
The 11 youngsters, from 7 to 11
years old, were accompanied by

Only two of the children had
ever been on a train before the
trip here, and they didn't remem
ber details. At Oakland they took
the ferry for the transbay trip to
San Francisco another first.
Not one had ridden a streetcar,
an elevator or an escalator. They I
never before had seen a ship, or
the ocean.
The zoo and the famed Playland
on the city's ocean beach pleased
them the .most.

Some trade groups want inter
est rates on government insured
mortgages raised, arguing that the
trouble with housing is the de
ficiency of mortgage money be
cause other forms of loans are
drawing higher interest rates and
therefore more attractive to banks
and other lenders than are mort
gages. The Eisenhower administration
has supported this argument by
asking Congress to increase the
interest rate on G.I. mortgage
loans from 4V4 to 5 per cent. Con
gress, however, has already turned
this idea down amidst criticism
from Democrats of the "hard mon
ey" policy. The administration was
able, without going to Congress,
to raise the interest rate on FHA
loans to 5 per cent. .
The action in Congress now to
suit of a year-long effort to provide

industry, which has lagged behind
the rest of the economy," the Home
Builders declared.

service station died Tuesday after
telling polite she was beaten,
splashed with gasoline and burned
by an indienlified man and wom
an. Mrs. Clifford Holloway, 51, said
the man and woman awakened her
before daylight at her home near
the store.
She said the intruders asked for
gasoline, hit her over the head to
force her to open the store, then
splashed gasoline around the store
and on her.

suaded to make adequate fundi

income family housing. Failure to
do this during the next year could
well result in congressional action
