Oil Industry
Leader Defends
Higher Prices
By IDWIN B. HAAKINSON
WASHINGTON m An oil in
dustry leader said Thursday re
cent increases in oil and gasoline
prices stemmed largely from
hither costs and a need to en
courage development of new oil
reserves.
llincs H. Baker, president of the
Humble Oil Ic Refining Co., Hous
ton, Tex., said this in testimony
prepared for a Senate investiga
tion of the oil for-Kurope program
and domestic price increases that
followed its inauguration. Baker
was the first oil industry spokes
man to be heard by a joint Sen
ale Antimonopoly - Public Lands
Subcommittee studying the situa
tion. Baker said "prices of crude oil,
gasoline and petroleum products
generally are relatively low."
The price boosts have drawn
heavy protests in and out of Con
gress. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith
(R-Maine) joined in the protests
Thursday as she prepared to testi
fy before the group.
