He May Be Late
But Still Around,
States Thornton
Former Douglas County Sheriff
Cliff Thornton and explorer Roy
Chapman Andrews have an unus
ual common problem.
Both have been termed "t h e
late" in stories appearing in print.
Twice Andrews has read in Time
Magazine of his demise. The last
time caused him to write the pub
lication a letter announcing he felt
"fine." It was printed, too.
Thornton, a healthy 51, was sur
prised recently to learn he was no
longer around. So were friends
who sent messages of sympathy
and cards in jest, after they learn
ed all was well.
The Roseburg businessman who
owns a motor court and ranch
and has an interest in a highway
construction operation was sheriff
m the early days of World War II.
He joined the service and took a
leave of absence. Later, he re
signed, and Bud Carter was elect
ed sheriff. Thornton did not return
to law enforcement work after the
war.
This week, he admitted he'd been
somewhat amazed when a recent
News-Review story about the sher
iff s reserve, which he organized in
October. 1041, stated he was "the
late Cliff Thornton. . ."
