Here's Why
Appliances
In Demand
Her are facts and figures which
explain why the demand for ma
jor appliances in America is climb
ing hteher and higher every year:
AUTOMATIC WASHERS
A survey conducted by a manu
facturer's home economics labor
atory showed that a family wash
of five eight-pound loads can be
done by an operator of average
skill in 27 minutes of the operat
or's time 5 4 minutes per load.
This is only 10 per cent of the en
ergy and 15 per cent of the time
required by other home laundry
methods. The tests also indicated
that home-washed linens and cloth
ing last from 33 1-3 per cent to
100 per cent longer than those com
mercially laundered.
AUTOMATIC DRYERS
The same survey showed that
use of a dryer saves a total of
three hours per week formerly
spent in hanging, sprinkling and
ironing clothes. It also eliminates
labor involved in earn ing 90 and
120 pounds of clothes to and from
the clothes-line. Dryer dried
clothes and household linens also
last longer than those line-dried
with better retention of fabric col
or and texture, less loss of tensile
strength. With drying time short
ened and drying made independ
ent of weather, fewer eioinej aoo
linens are required.
AUTOMATIC DISHWASHERS
The research showed that for
the average family, about five
minutes are required to prepare
dishes and load a dishwasher, com
pared with 35 minutes needed to
scrape, rinse, dry and put away
dishes wnen uie wore is aone dv
hand, breakage of china and
glassware is reduced. Use of dish
cloths and dishtowels is almost
eliminated.
HOME FREEZERS
The company' studies indicated
that food preservation by freezers
requires only half as much time
as canning. Time and energy are
saved by fewer shopping trips.
Foods can be cooked and frozen
when time is available. With
both fresh and cooked frozen foods
on hand, meals can be prepared
quickly and easily. Money can be
saved by buying food in quantities,
taking advantage of sales and of
low seasonal prices. Food prepa
ration costs and food wastes are
reduced by wise use of plan-overs
and left-overs.

NO PLACE FOR MISTAKES
An expert's advice in any kitch
en improvement is desirable, and
especially when a built-in range is
considered, states the Gas Appli
ance Manufacturers Association.
SAVE YOUR ENERGY
Since studies have shown that it
requires 8 per cent more energy
to stand than to sit, the wise home
maker does as much of her work
in a sitting position as is possible.
Thanks to the wide variety of
sizes and styles now available in
standard and special-purpose steel
cabinets, remodeling an old kitch
en or planning one for a new home
is both simple and fun.
Today's steel kitchen can be
tailored perfectly to room sue re
quirements, yet provide the ad
vantage of economy because of
mass production.
To get some idea of the variety
! possible, consider these specialty
units:
Snack bars that serve as handy
dining and work surfaces.
Handsome divider cabinets, with
door openmgs on both sides, which
can be used to separate the food
preparation center from a dining
or laundry area. These units sup
ply compact storage room for
supplies, which can be reached
from either area.
Special steel units to house waist-
nigh ovens ana proviae misc
sDace underneath.
Curved door and rounded steel
shelf units which can be fitted at
ihp end of rows of standard base
and wall cabinets to ease walk
through passageways ana aaa a
clean decorative line to the kitch
en. All of these precision built cabi
nets help stvlize the steel kitchen.
Each unit, regardless of its design,
blends with all others of the same
make. This means that the multi
purpose kitchen, though made up
of two or three centers for cooking,
laundry, dining or other activities,
can be fashioned into one coordi
nated work saver with a custom
tailored appearance.
Remember when planning for
base and wall cabinets that the
ri?ht height depends upon both the
job to be done and your height,
Here's What To Do
When Power Fail
What happens to a freezer full
of precious food when the electric
power goes off? , ,.
Cornell University specialists say
there is little chance of frozen
posture and arm length.
Here's how the Pennsylvania
State University College of Agri
culture Extension Service recom
mends that you find your best
work heights for various kitchen
chores:
STAND-UP JOBS
Stand at ease with your feet
slightly apart and arms down at
your sides. Raise your arms from
the elbow until the palms of your
hands arrive in a position where y,e centcr 0( each compartment.
you couia mi iwa wiiuuui suwr '
tng. Measure the distance irom
the floor to your hands. This is the
best working height for your food
preparation or mixing counter.
SITTING JOBS
Sit at ease in a comfortable
straight chair with a back sup
port. Place your feet flat on the
floor, arms down at your sides.
From the elbow raise your arms
until parallel with the floor. The
distance from the floor to your
wrist is the right height for a lap
board. Proper height of a sink is ex
tremely important. If it is too deep
or low, you will have to stoop,
lean or slouch to do your work.
The proper position is one that
will pnahle vnu to stand comfor
tably erect and be able to place : COSTUME JEWELRY is a gift

Color Treatments
Carried Inside
Some White Units
Whether or not you like color
on the outside of your appliances,
it' seems possible that some of
those you buy may not be white
inside.
Some of the makers found costs
mounting when they tried to match
all the new outside colors inside
their products. Last year they tried
various ways of meeting the prob
lem. At least one manufacturer
changed interior colors on both
white and colored appliances. He
thinks he has found a single in
terior color that goes well with
both white and colored exteriors.
The idea has not moved far
enough to establish a trend, but
in the future there is a good
chance the appliances you buy
may have color inside whether
they are white or colored outside.
