State. Agriculture Dept.
Finally To Have Own Home
By September the state depart
ment of agriculture will be in its
own buildng for the first time in
the department's 25 years of ex
istence. Although the department's
new home has been marked "Ag
riculture" for years, until recently
only one-third of the building was
occupied by the department.
It was originally known as the
printing building and until last
year the printing plant occupied
the first floor and basement. As a
result, the department was handi
capped in certain phases of its
work because of crowded condi
tions and the scattering of its head
quarters operations in three build
ings in Salem. Two of these build
ings are former residences.
But the last legislature eased the
situation and appropriated 4122,500
for remodeling this building for de
partment use. James L. Payne
was the architect selected by the
Board of Control and R. L. Forster
and Son are the contractors. The
building's approximate 30,000
square feet enables it to give up
the two leased residences.
The remodeled full basement will
house the animal industry division,
the federal-state brucellosis labor
atory, storage and stock room, con
ference room and library. The fed
eral veterinarian and his staff, for
merly located in Portland, were
moved to new basement quarters
at material benefit to livestock
and the department.
On the first floor will be the
plant industry division including
the federal-state shipping point in
spection supervisor, the Salem ar
ea shipping point office and the
walnut control board office. Also,
on this floor will be the director's
office, division of market develop
ment, information representative
staff, legal staff, business and per
sonnel managers. Weights and
laboratory and calibrating room
adjacent to the service entrance.
Clerical, stenographic and account
ing personnel will occupy a large
central portion of the first floor.
The foods and dairies, weights
and measures division will be on
the upper floor. Remodeling of the
lation of new equipment will be
completed in September. The plant
pathology and entomology labora
tories and plant pest and disease
survey staffs will be added to this
floor. An addition to it will provide
space for the hop analysis labor
atory. Many individuals aided the de
partment on obtaining adequate
housing. They include the building
advisory committee established by
former Director Peterson, the State
Board of Agriculture, farm organi-

throughout the state, state officials
and legislators.
Director J. F. Short comments,
"While our new facilities are ac
ceptable and adequate for the time
being, they do not answer the de
sire of the state's agricultural and
civic leaders that agriculture event
ually be housed in a building on the
capitol mall. Such a building would
be in keeping with agriculture's
importance to the economy of the
state and add dignity to the stature
of the capitol mall group.
"Our present location is handi
capped by traffic and train noises
and is not completely accessible to
the public and state personnel hav
ing dealings with agriculture.
"After the busy harvest season
and if our workload permits, we
hope to hold an open house this
fall to acquaint everyone with our
work and remodeled facilities.
However, visits are always wel
comed." The agriculture building is locat
ed on 12th street in Salem, just at
the edge of the group of large state
buildings.
