Set To Hospital

inch portable television set to Ward
1 at the KoseDurg veterans Hospi
tal, reports Mrs. Nancy Wulf. Vet
erans Administration Volunteer
Service.
She said the presentation was
made over the weekend during i
visitation by the post. The set was
presented by Cmdr. Ralph New
man. At the same visitation, nine vol
unteers from the bugene dav ana
auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign
Wars and Auxiliary passed out 40
pounds of bananas, a bushel of
peaches and cigarettes. They also
conducted a Softball game. Some
200 patients were entertained.
Mrs. Wulf also lauded the Elks
Lodge of Roseburg for allowing
members of the "Amos and Andy"
show, which visited here recently,
to entertain at the hospital.
Mrs. Wulf again emphasized that
volunteer help was needed at the
hospital for any length of time
which can be donated. She said vol
unteers need not belong to any or
ganizations. Range Camp Draws
Canyonville Youth
Representing Douglas County at
this year s Youth Kange camp was
Larry Michaels of Canyonville. The
camp was held earlier this month
on the Malheur National Wildlife
Refuge 30 miles south of Burns.
Michaels was elected captain of
Croup I at the camp and placed
third in the plant description con
test. Jn this contest, Doys were
handed a range plant and asked
to write as complete a description
of it as possible.
A total of 50 boys from 16 east
ern and southern Oregon Counties
attended the camp. Those attend
ing were selected through plant
identification contests held in each
county or on the basis of leader
ship, citizenship and love of the
outdoors.
Each boy at camp received a
$25 scholarship to cover costs of
attending camp. Local sponsor of
the scholarship was South Umpqua
Grange.
Former Minister
Visits Sutherlin
Mr. and Mrs. Rea Kleinfeldt and
sons, David and Gayler, of Sey
mour, Tex., spent the weekend in
Sutherlin with the lattcr's brother
and aister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
George Warren.
Kleinfeldt is attending Teni
Christian University at Fort Worth,
Tex., and was a former minister
of the Sutherlin Christian Church.
He held services Sunday evening
in Sutherlin and his son, Gayler,
sang a soio.
After the services an informal re
ception was held for them in the so
cial rooms of the church, with Mrs.
Ruth Vogelpohl, serving the cake,
Mrs. Ora Irwin pouring coffee and
Mrs. Ada Abcone, serving the
punch.
COLE SERVICES HELD
Funeral services for Margaret
Cole, wife of Maynard Cole, who
passed away Aug. 17 following a
iong illness, were held Monday in
the chapel of the Mt. Scott Funeral
Home in Portland.
Mrs. Cole was well known in
this area, having visited often in
Roseburg with her sisters-in-law.
Florence and Violette Cole, and
her brother-in-law, Leloyd Cole.
one was a member of Waverlv
Chapter 134, OES, and the Baptist
Church.

CWA Deadlock In Talks
NEW YORK (fl Negotiators
for the Western Electric Co. and
the Communications Workers of
America (CWA) were deadlocked
Tuesday over terms for a new
contract covering 18,000 telephone
installation workers in 44 states.
A negotiating session ended
Tuesday night with the next talk
left subject to call by either side.
Possibility of a strike and dis
ruption of long distance telephone
service remained.
A one-year contract between the
union and Western Electric, the
manufacturing arm ot tne tseii
Telephone System, expired last
Saturday midnight, A strike had
been authorized by the union
membership, but the CWA agreed
to continuation of work under
terms of the expired contract as
negotiations continued.

of the theft of $20,000 in jewelry
and furs reported by Raymond r.
Clark, a figure in the recent Port
land grand jury vice probe, spread
to Seattle Monday.
Clark told Portland police that
his apartment was burglarized
Saturday night while he and his
wife were at a football game. He

Police said two suspects in the
robbery were being sought in
Washington.

Suit For Son s Damages
Willie B rid lies has filed suit in
Douglas County District Court for
his son, Curtis W.. 19, against
James Howard Clement and Char
les K. Clement for $52,067.58 as the
result ot an auto accident.
Bridges alleges that Charles
Clement, driving his father's car,
plowed into the rear of the car in
which Curtis Bridges was riding,
ine complaint says the car was
being hauled away by another car
and a police car had been station
ed behind the two cars, with light
flashing. The complaint charges
c m a t ics element with recklessness.
The accident allegedly occured on
Highway 99 two miles south of
Koseburg, Jan. 1, 1956.
According to the complaint. Cur
tis received a blow on the head
causing considerable pain and suf
fering permanently. It asks for
$50,000 general and $2,067.58 spec
ial damages.

A preliminary hearing for Harry
Robert Mentzer, 23, of 1688 NW
Crouch St., Roseburg, has been
set over. The hearing was sched
uled for Monday.
District Judge Warren Woodruff
has not set a new time for the
hearing. Mentzer is charged with
the rape of a Koseburg woman. He
is being held under $2,000 bail.
