DROUGHT Wayne Worley, office manager of the Midland,
Tex., Agriculture Commission, silts the dry soil in what once
was a fertile and productive cotton field. Drought has stricken
the area, and the cotton is barely above the ground. At this
time it should be ready for picking.
Special classes for frozen foods
will be continued this year at the
Douglas County Fair, and local
merchants nave promised jaie mo
del freezers in which to display
them.
Anne Turlcy, superintendent of
the canned foods division at the
fair, said this will enable contest
ants to take their exhibits home
none the worse for wear.
Besides the frozen foods, there
will be classes for all canned foods
and vegetables, as well as meats,
fish, jellies, jams, preserves and
pickles.
Lodging, Food Slated
For 4-H, FFA Members
Board and room will be avail
able to 4-H and FFA members who
plan to stay at the fairgrounds
during lairume, according to 4-xi
agent Frank von Borstel.
The youths will be housed in
quonset huts on the grounds and
will be chaperoned by club lead
ers. Meal tickets will be on sale at a
reasonable rate. -

HAIL OF A NOTE William McNamara, who farms north of
Walker, Iowa, looks over tome of the 95 acres of corn he lost
in a tremendous hailstorm. Twenty-four windows in his house
were broken by flst-size hailstones. Other hail came down in
larger chunks and slabs. Some went through the roof.
