Sleeping Sickness Threat1 Seen In East Washington
SEATTLE
A slight but
definite threat of sleeping sickness
faces campers in eastern Wash
ington, a spokesman for the State
Health Department said Thurs
day. Dr. W. R. Giedt, epidemiologist,
said several illnesses in human
patients are being investigated.
An outbreak of the disease
known as equine encephalitis
occurred in 53 horses in eastern
areas of the state.
The disease is transmitted to
humans by mosquitoes. Direct
contact with horses is not in itself
dangerous, Dr. Giedt said. He
suggested campers use protective
doming,
HEREFORDS pasture with dairy-type cattle on land owned by Mickey Fullerton just west
of Winston. The scene is typical of central Douglas County. Irrigation water, being
sprinkled in background, is drawn from nearby Lookingglass Creek. (Paul Jenkins
