Sheep Dog Trials Featured
Again; Rules Are Listed
A highlight of the 1956 Douglas
County Fair will be the fourth
annual Dougals County Sheep Dog
Trials.
Fair Manager Die Turlcy has an
aounced that the trials will be held
show sheep raisers the many
advantages of owning a working
log, as well as to furnish enter
ainment for fairgoers.
A total of $210 in prize money
A'ill be awarded to the top six dogs.
i'he winner will get $60, the sec
md place dog $5(1 and so on down
.o $10 .for sixth place.
Rules announced by Turley for
he trials are:,
1. Entries are open to any work
ng sheep dogs. There is no entry
ee. A maximum of eight dogs
-vill be accepted with preferance
joing to competitors of previous
ears. , .
2. Dogs must fetch sheep from
the arena corner, run them through,
a gate and then pen them.
3. Dogs will work with approx
imately five sheep all sheep used
will be similar and none will b
used twice.
4. The handler may assist tha
dog in any way he desires. How
ever this will be taken into ac
count in judging, and excess assist
ance will count against the dog.
5. There will be three judge
and their decision will be final.
Judging will be based on: Judge
ment of the dog, obedience by tha
dog of signals from the handler,
time to pen sheep and assistance
from the handler.
6. There will be a 12-mmute
time limit and a two-minute warn
ing signal.
A new chemical control for Can
ada thistle has shown excellent
results in one-year trials by Ore
gon Stale college scientists and
could cut costs to one-third or one
half of the best current chemical
spray program.
William Fur tick and David Chil
cote, farm crops researchers, ob
tained almost 100 percent thistle
control on patches sprayed last
summer with a special mixture of
two pounds of 50 percent amino
triazol (ATZ) and one pound of
2,4-D amino per acre. Eight
pounds per acre of 50 per cent
ATZ was the best previous rec
ommendation. ATZ costs about
$2.25 a pound, and 2,4-D is rough
ly $1 a pound.
The trial mixture required spe
cial formulation of the two chem
icals. Furtick and Chitcole are
now testing mixtures of 2,4-D es
ter and ATZ to see if comparable
results can be obtained without
special formulation.
In the meantime, the scientists
say farmers can get about the
same results with two separate
sprays: two pounds of 50 per cent
ATZ per acre followed the next
day with one pound of 2,4-D.
A word of caution ATZ and
2,4-D arc not "selective killers"
and cannot be used to spray thistle
out of crops. They gave good con
trol, however, when applied to
thistle stubble after crop harvest.
The best time to spray thistle
patches is earlier in the summer
when thistle is in the bud stage.
Furtick says the chemical mix
ture is slow-acting, comparable to
straight ATZ, and results may not
show for three or four weeks.
The amount of water needed to
spray an acre will vary with the
type of spray equipment used.
Both high and low-volume spray
ers are in common use on Ore
gon farms. The important thing,
say the researchers, is to wet the
plants and to get the recommend
ed dosage of chemical on per acre.
