On Fair Agenda
Shades of ttw Gay Ninctitil
An old'fashioned balloon ascan
aion act will ba a featured at
traction each day of the Doug
las County Fair at o p.m.
This unique form of entertain
ment had its heyday in the era
of world fairs and expositions
but fair manager Dick Turiey
reports that the ect has proven
amazingly successful at other re
cent Western fairs.
The balloon use'd will be a big
silk sack completely open at one
end and filled with warm air.
A skilled aerial artist will han
dle the balloon during its as
cent. At a certain altitude me
balloon passenger will become
' a parachute jumper by releas
ing his hold on the balloon and
and will descend to the ground.
Turiey states Hat the act
should be a colorful and differ
ent spectacle for fa'rgoers.
County Fair Adds
Horticulture Space
Sweeping changes in the floral
department of the 1956 Douglas
County Fair have been revealed
by Mrs. C. J. Bielman, Sutherlin
gardener and department superin
tendent. Although the artistic arrange
ments and horticultural specimens
will remain, as before, in the re
frigerated showrooms, a -new ven
tilated roof covering over 2,000
square feet will be installed outside
to house garden club and potted
plant sections of the show.
'Ours is the only fair in the stale
with cooled quarters for the floral
show," Mrs. Bielman noted.
"These facilities' and the wonder
ful support of garden clubs and
others enable us to have the best
floral show in the state," added
Fair manager Dick Turiey.
Kules for the various horticultur
al classes remain about the same
this year, Mrs. Bielman reported.
The artistic arrangement section
will carry such classes as "Coun
try Kitchen," "Grandma's Flower
Garden" and "Harvest Time." En
tries are open to individuals and
garden clubs throughout the coun
ty. The deadline for floral entries
has been set for 6 p.m. Aug. 22.
Ample Parking Ready
For Autos At Fair
Ample, and free, parking is
promised for fair-goers the last
four days of this week, according
to Fair Manager Dick Turiey.
The traffic, as at most of the
big events at the fairgrounds, is
to be handled by the Douglas Coun
ty Sheriff's Reserve.
Most of the parking will be done
in the large open lots to the west
of the fairgrounds, and lanes will
be left open in the parking areas
so that hasty exit may be made
at any time.
The hard-working reserve is to
be on duty through all four days
of the big show.
The first XT. S. Census in 1790
listed 3,929,214 people.
