Christine plans to attend Mt. Angel
Academy in Portland, and the oth
ers are to remain in this vicinity.
Mrs. Crisler and the late Mr.
Crisler lived on the Webb place on
South Deer Creek from 1918 to
1921, when they moved to Califor
nia. They moved back to Dixonville
in 1942, having bought the Walter
Leake house on Buckhorn Road,
as well as acreage from the Lind
blooms. Since her husband's death
in 1952, Mrs. Crisler has farmed
alone, except for help from Galen
and the other youngsters.
Mrs. Crisler plans to sell or lease
the place before moving to Mc
Minnville, if possible. The fall
term there begins in the first part
of September.
The elder son, Donald, who is
married and has two children, is
vice principal of Roosevelt Junior
High School in El Cerrito, Calif.
Galen, a junior at Linfield, was
very active in local high school ac
tivities, and was a violinist witn
the Roseburg Symphony Orchestra,
as well as a popular soloist. He is
now a member of the Linfield Quar
tet, and has won many honors in
usic and drama. He plans to live
at Delta Psi Delta. This summer
Galen has directed the choir of the
First Baptist Church in Roseburg.
Farm Income Nation's Top
Problem Of Present Year,
Claim Of Senator Morse
By WAYNE MORSE
Sanior lanator from Oregon
EUGENE From the point of
view of what the 84tn congress
meant to Oregon, decreasing farm
income and rising costs are among
our most pressing problems, not
only for farmers and ranchers, but
their communities as well. The
first farm bill passed by Congress,
but vetoed by the President was a
good bill. The two-price wheat
amendment which I sponsored was
put in the bill by the Senate. It
was one of tne provisions wnicn
the President said made it a bad
bill, although it would have boost
ed wheat growers income without
burden to tne consumer, neipea
move surpluses abroad at compet
itive prices and provided feed
wheat for poultry ana livestock
producers ' at lower prices.
Mv amendment to eliminate the
requirement for stale payments for
teed and seed to disaster areas
was adopted and was in the vc
toed bill. A provision, sought by
cattlemen, to give incentives for
marketing underweight cows and
calves to reduce production, was!
narrowly defeated. In each in-
stance, mostly Republicans voted
against farm-family income im
provements and mostly Democrats
voted for them.
Last year, upon the recommend
ations of Ore Hon cherry growers,
succeeded in adding to the Re
ciprocal Trade bill the right to a
hearing on damage to our cherry
producers caused by imports, that
Senate provision was dropped in
conference the only major sec
tion to be eliminated because of
Administration opposition.
ihe Democratic 84 Ui Congress
reversed the no-new-slart policy of
the Administration and of the 83rd
Republican Concress. Dick Neu-
bcrger and 1 made this issue one
of our major efforts for Oregon.
As a result. Oregon will receive
badly needed flood control, power
and navigation from new projects
sucn as John vay uam, cougar
Dam, Green Peter Dam, Hills
Creek Dam, Holley Dam, the deep
ening of the mouth of the Colum
bia, flood control aid to several
Columbia River drainage districts
and harbor projects at Coos Bay,
Tillamook, Brookings and War ron
ton. All of the projects for dams
are wholly federal and do not in
volve a partnership give-away.
Deplores Dam Bill Defeat
Our great loss, irreparable if not
reversed by the courts so that it
can be rectified in the next Con
gress, was the defeat of the high
Hells Canyon Dam. Only two Re
publican senators withstood White
House pressure to vote against the
bill and 43 fell into line to oppose
maximum development of the
greatest remaining multipurpose
damsite in the country and in favor
of permanent waste of the full
power, flood control, navigation,
irrigation and recreation potential
Mosquito Population
To Face New Chemical
EUGENE LP Lane County's
mosquito population, thriving be.
cause it has built up resistance
to DDT, will face a new chemical
in a couple of weeks.
Milton Beuhler, county
qmto control officer, said here that
he will start using malathion, the
new chemical, after he travels to
Bakersfield, Calif., Aug. 27, to
attend a meeting of mosquito con
trol officers.
He said he wants to learn how
other areas dispense the
malnthion before trying it here.
Last week he told the county
mosquito control advisory board
that the local mosquito control
program is becoming ineffective
hfr.HHiP nf (hit itiuAK.'e immnnilu

Damage estimated varies from
quarter of a million dollars to as
much as $400,000.
A night watchman first discov
ered the flames and called fire
men in Sandy and Boring. The
fire took four hours to control.
The mill owner, Walter E. Koch,
said there was no insurance on the
property. The plant, employing
about 70, produced an average of
100,000 board feet of lumber per
day, Koch said.

of the deepest gorge in America.
Especially in view of the narrow
brush with flood disaster that we
had this Spring, this Administra
tion act in behalf of the private
utilities and against the public in
terest was callous partisanship.
Progress for both sound conser
vation and lumbering were achiev
ed in this Congress. A large scale
access road program which Neu
berger and I fought for was en
acted as part of the federal aid
highway program. It means more
timber on a sound and competitive
basis and better cutting practices.
Greater attention was given to rec
reation and wildlife in our nation
al forests and more personnel to
help in the marketing of federal
timber, all of which I advocated.
The executive agencies held back
on these programs and Congress
gave the needed nudges and funds.
Over Administration protests, it
boosted the minimum wage to
$1.00 an hour. This is important
to our high wage rate stale to dis
courage competition from low-wage
states. Also over Administration
roadblocks two new sound princi-
pies wore written into the Social
Security law payment for dis-
ability and a lowered retiremenet
age for women,
This Congress left unfinished
work as every Congress does. But
none distressed me more than the
inability to enact federal aid to
education. The Administration
must accept responsibility for
failure to push for federal aid as
it did push for the defeat of Hells
Canyon just a few days later.
this is part of the storv of the
84th Democratic Congress.
What the 85th Concress will do
will depend primarily on the No
vember election. Will the voters
sanction the Administration's poli
cy of special privileges for a few,
at the expense of the many, or
will they vote to increase the Dem
ocratic majority in Congress so
that a better job in passing gener
al welfare legislation can be done
in the 85th Congress? Will they
vote to continue a White House
Administration by big business or
will they vote to elect a Demo
cratic President who will place the
business of governing first?
Dulles Promises
Action To Halt
Jews Oppression
STARLIGHT. Pa. M Secre
tary of State Dulles here has told
B'nai B'rith. Jewish service or
ganization, that the State Depart
ment will take "formal diplomat
ic action" in an effort to curb
Arab nation restrictions on Amer
ican citizens of the Jewish faith.
Dulles, in a letter to B'nai
referred to a U.S. Senate resolu
tion last month which called such
discrimination incompatible with
American principles.
The Senate resolve, Dulles said,
"has afforded the Department of
State the opportunity to continue
its efforts to impress on the Arab
states the sentiments of this coun
try." Dulles added the Senate resolu
tion has been relayed to U.S. mis-
mos-lsions in Arab states where Amer
lean representatives "have been
directed to take every appropriate
opportunity to emphasize the prin
cipal oi equality of all Americans
and to seek its compliance by the
Arab states."
Restrictions by Arab nations
imposed on American Jews have
included refusal to honor visas for
international travel; prohibiting
trade and commerce between
Arab business firms and Ameri
can companies that are Jewish
owned or have Jewish executives,
and banning Jewish civilian work
ers from U.S. military installa
tions in the Middle East.
