Salem Couple Awarded
Heavy Crash Damages
MEDFORD Wl A federal
court jury decided Wednesday
night that a Seattle motorist
should pay $33,022 to Claude Eas
ton Bird of Salem and $9,784 to
Bird's wife, Juanita, for injuries
suffered in a highway collision
north of here on Jan. 26, 1055.
Howard Desully Hodson was the
Seattle man against whom the
damages were assessed. Both he
and Bird, drivers of the cars in
the collision, had alleged the other
was negligent and each sued for
damages.
The jury, returning its verdict
late Wednesday night, made no
mention of Hodson's claim. It was
considering both damage requests.

His plans were relayed through
congressional leaders who visited
him Tuesday.
Several Democratic senators
struck back at reports that Eisen
hower was "irritated" the Democratic-controlled
Congress for its
handling of his proposed legisla
tive program.

Seizure Forces Railway To Pay
HULL, Que. W The wealthy
Canadian Pacific Railway had
owed Raymond Foucault $202.50
for five weeks and Foucault was
tired of waiting. So he had the
Ottawa-Maniwaki train one
locomotive, one tender, one bag
gage car and two passenger cars
seized and ordered sold for
auction.
The railroad paid in 24 hours.
The story goes hack to Oct. 7,
1933 when Foucault, a laborer,
pleaded guilty to beating up a
CPU employe on the train. Fou
cault paid a $25 fine and court
costs.
Then the railroad, after long
deliberation sued him for the time
his victim had lost and compen
sation for the injured man.
I tie suit was dismissed June 4
after Foucault's lawyer argued
that the railway had failed to file
us damage action within a year
of the assault, as required by
Quebec law. This time the court
ordered the railroad to pay Fou
cauit $202.50 costs.
Seizur Gets Action
When the money wasn't forth
coming, Foucault's lawyer applied
for a seizure order. And on Mon
day, as the train was about to set
out on its 90-milc run the com
muters homeward bound to cot
tages in the Gatineau Hills. Court

peared to demand Foucault's
$202.50 plus $14. bailiff's fee.
Since Stationmaster J. R. Thi
baudcau couldn't pay up, Cheval
ier "siczed" the train, as well as
the benches, chairs, tables and
typewriter in the station. The auc
tion was set for July 23 unless
the railroad paid up. Then he put
the train in custody of its crew
and let it make its run.
Later a CPU attorney arrived
with the $216.75 and the case was
closed.
'Partnership'
Plan Advocated
At Power Hearing

warned the Corps of Army Engi
neers Tuesday that hydroelectric
proiects under construction
planned in the Pacific Northwest
will not meet power load require
ments predicted by 1975 without
added steam generation.
The warning came from Norman
L. Krey, Kaiser s Northwest op
erations manager, at an Army En
gineers hearing on the Columbia
switched to Lewiston, Idaho,
Wednesday.
Other civic and business leaders
appearing at Tuesday's session
urged the Army Engineers to pro
mote more flood control storage
and back the "partnership" prin
ciple in power and navigation de
velopments.
The president of the Washington
Water Power Co. of Spokane, Kin
sey Robinson, told the hearing he
advocated a partnership plan for
construction of Bruces Eddy Dam
on the Clearwater River in Idaho.
Ralph T. Gillespie, president of
the Washington Farm Bureau Fed
eration, advocated the partner
ship plan in the construction of
multi-purpose dams of the future.
"Power should be primarily a
function of private enterprise," the
Spokane man said.
Several representatives of the
Inland Waterways Assn. urged
that .navigation on the Columbia
be extended to Wenatchee and on
the Snake to Lewiston.
Representatives of a numher of
wildlife organizations appared to
voice objections to several pro
posed power and multipurpose developments.
SAWLOG SALES DROP
CORVALLIS Wi The volume
of sawlog sales is lower than one
year ago, the farm forest prod
ucts report of the Oregon State
College extension service said
Tuesday.
Prices for No. 2 Douglas fir
sawlogs at Willamette Valley
mills were $50 to $60 a thousand
feet in the past week, the report
said, with selected peelables to
$65 for second growth and $68 for
old growth. Peelers had a $20
range with a top of $110 in some
parts of the valley.
