Using Your Automobile Wisely Makes Family Picnics Enjoyable
The picnic is a venerable Amer
ican institution. A picnic, properly
planned, provides pleasant diver
sion, an appetizing repast in an in
teresting setting and an escape
from the humdrum problems of
daily life. Picnics are peculiarly
family or group affairs. Using
your automobile wisely will insure
the best possible picnics, offering
maximum pleasure to all concern
ed. To have a good picnic you

what accessories to take along.
There are all sorts of picnics

already prepared. If you are in
need to do a little advance plan-1 doubt about what to take, browse

Here are some practical ideas
for picnics and some do's and
don'ts about them.

Picnic Accessories There are
dozens of them portable grills,
frying pans, plastic dishes, knives
and forks, containers of all sorts
from big refrigerator boxes that
will keep enough food for a dozen
people cool all day, to wicker pic
nic baskets, fitted with essentials
for four people. Thermos bottles
come close to being an essential
picnic accessory. Another h a can
opener, and you'd better be sure
you have wide mouth pliers to
open screw tops of bottles. A use
ful accessory, particularly in wood
ed areas, or beaches, is a tarpau
lin or ground cloth of canvas. It
will keep dirt, insects and sand
out of the food, protect against
damp ground. If you want to go
all out you can get folding ta
bles and chairs, and elaborate kits
to hold everything.
Finding a picnic spot isn't dif
ficult if you plan intelligently. Al
most all beaches are good places
for picnics, but pick a spot far
back from the water line or tide
line, where the sand is smooth and
level. Lake shores, and river
banks are likely spots. Nearly all
state and national parks have
established picnic areas, often with
tables and ovens for cooking, re
ceptacles for refuse, and useful
personal facilities. Many states
have wayside parks along main
highways which offer good picnic
facilities. But if you want to avoid
the crowd and have a picne all
your own, you can generally find
a good spot along a country lane
perhaps beside a lake or river.
But if you picnic on private ground
ask the owner first. Trespassing
can be punished by a fine plus
damages.
When to Go obviously you will
select a day when the weather is
pleasant. No one has yet designed
a technique for having a pleasant
picnic in the rain. Some neoDle
enjoy early morning picnics, but
a general ruie mia-aiiernoon is
a good time, so that the actual
picnic will occur during the golden
twilight hours, when the air is
cool and a picnic fire looks best.
But if you have a nicnic that runs
past night fall, be sure you have
a flashlight alone, or some sort
of a portable lantern.
Do's and Don'ts for Picnics
Do select level ground, and dry
ground, spreading a ground cloth
to sit on and on which to spread

i Don't build a fire close (o

damaged by we neat.
Do put out your fire when you
are through that means spread
ing the coals, throwing water on
them making sure there arc
no lurking embers to start a blaze
after you leave.
Don't picnic close beside a high
way. It's both dangerous and is
probably against the law.
Don't drive away from a picnic
spot and throw your litter into a
roadside ditch in a paper bag.
Next to leaving it on the picnic
site it's the most inconsiderate
thing you can do.
