Charges Leveled
On 3 Prisoners
VANCOUVER, B.C. Wl-Charges
of "forcible confinement" were
laid Tuesday against three in
mates who held a guard prisoner
for six hours in Oakalla Prison
last week.
Robert Tremblay, Marcel Fre
nette and Charles Talbot, sen
tenced recently to 20 years in pris
on for attempted murder, were
scheduled to appear in Police
Court Wednesday.
The prosecution arises out of the
seizure of Oakalla guard Ernest
Loveless by three inmates in the
prison barber shop Hay 7.
A razor was held at his throat
and a pair of barber's shears to
the back of his neck by the in
mates. The threat to the guard's life
during a six-hour ordeal in the
barber shop came within a few
hours of the time Tremblay, Fre
nette and Talbot lost their appeal
against .the 20-year sentence for
the attempted murder of Thomas
Kinna last fall.
They released Loveless un
harmed after a Vancouver news
paperman promised to air their
complaints of their trial in an
extra edition.
TO THE VOTERS
OF DOUGLAS COUNTY
Reference to the office of 'County Surveyor:
A survey of property which may have been improperly or carelessly
done or one that has not been done in accordance with the laws of Oregon
and the "Instructions for the Survey of the Public- Lands" it a waste of ,
.money. For this reason there is no such thing as a cheap survey. It is
either correctly made or it is not.
As a Deputy County Surveyor in Douglas County ' for 9 years and
County Surveyor for 11 years, I have had to compare and evaluate and
examine many surveys by various engineers and land surveyors. Much of
this has been done for the ottorneys and title companies practicing in
Douglas County.
The methods to be used by the County Surveyor in making surveys
' is prescribed for him by law, while the private practicing surveyors or
engineer is not so governed. Even some of the County Surveyors in Oregon
appear to be incompetent, the present County Surveyor of Multnomah not
beiny a registered engineer, or land surveyor.
- When I determined to resign as County Surveyor, I recommended to
County Court the man whom I considered the most competent in Douglas
County to fill this office, namely the present incumbent, FRED M. DARBY.
. , Mr. Darby has had many years experience in land surveys, retracing
government surveys, Right of Way surveys, etc. before coming to work for
X the County Surveyor's office as a draftsman. I found him to be thoroughly
! competent and of unquestioned honesty and integrity. At my request he
took and passed the examination for registration at e land surveyor in
Oregon. At that time I appointed him my chief deputy.

1 5 Or More Persons
Exposed To Radiation
WASHINGTON Wl Fifteen or
more persons were exposed to ra
diation at an atomic power plant
project at ft. ueivoir, va., Mon
day, but the government says the
amount was "not serious."
'"After investigation of the inci
dent those involved were assured
by the Atomic Energy Commis
sion (AEC) that the radiation
doses received were not serious,"
AEC said in a statement.
Ft. Bclvoir is about 15 miles
south of Washington. The Army
is working there on a small-sized
atomic power reactor. The radia
tion was not from fissionable ma
terial, but from an industrial irid
ium source.
The AEC said the Iridium, be
ing used in X-raying welds to
make sure they were perfect,
"was removed from its shielded
container and contrary to stand
ard practice left unshielded for
about three hours."
