Eisenhower Feels Valuable Time Lost On A-Ship
WASHINGTON ti President
Eisenhower feels "we've lost valu
able time" in getting started on
development of any atomic-powered
"peace ship."
The President's views were set
forth in a letter made public Tues
day by Rep. Tollefson (K-Wash).
The President last year recom
mended building an atomic exhibit
ship which he said could tour the
world's ports to dramatize his
"atoms for peace" plan. But the
House passed instead a bill for a
nuclear - powered cargo-passenger
vessel.
Tollefson, senior Republican
member of the House Merchant
Marine Committee, wrote the Pres
ident Dec. 30 suggesting Eisenhow
er give his support to the merchant
ship measure, now before the Senate-House
Atomic Energy Committee.
Last Thursday In hit State of the
Union message Eisenhower again
urged Congress to approve an ex
hibit ship.
Petition Asking For Vote
On Sports Center Filed
I PORTLAND in The expected
'petition calling for a vote on the
proposed eight-million-dollar Port
land sports center was filed Tues
day. The Initiative measure would re
quire that the sports center be built
on the east side of the Willamette
River. The petition needs 18,316
signatures to put the measure on
the 'May primary ballot.
The city committee that recently
selected a west side site for the
center decided to hire attorneys
to fight an injunction suit brought
by the east siders.
In his letter to Tollefson, the
President said:
"Questions of our own and other
nations' timing, the specific pur
pose of the vessel, and the availa
bility of nuclear scientists, tech
nicians and equipment entered into
my conclusions, that the socallcd
'peace ship' plan is a desirable
course to follow at this time. . .
We've lost valuable time and ought
to get this ship under way as
promptly as we can."
Eisenhower did not say specific
ally whether he would accept the
mercnam snip as suusianuauy car
; rying out his plan. '
i "I don't think the President Is
j holding out for any particular
s bill," Tollefson said, "he agrees
; that we should move promptly. 1
think the bill the House has passed
has the best chance under present
I circumstances."
Washington Asks Permit To Build Atom Power Plant

SEATTLE I A plan under
which the State Power Commission
would bid for a permit to build a
new type of atomic power plant
was laid before members Tuesday
by J. Frank Ward, managing di-
The proposed plant would be of
the liquid metal - fuel type and
probably would not be in operation
for five or six years, Ward said.
I Whether the state commission
will make a final commitment to
build the project will be dependent
upon the operation of an experi
mental reactor of the new type
the Atomic Energy Commission
now has under consideration, he
added.
Before taking up the atomic re
actor proposal. Ward reported on

However, before any decision
can be made, he continued, infor

This secondary hydro power, he

the steam-generated power. The
