martial of Lt. Col. Paul V. Liles,
a West Point graduate, opens here
.Monday before a 12-man court of
Army officers.
In a pre-trial interview Satur
day, the 39-year-old Birmingham,
Ala., career soldier said he will
plead innocent to Army charges
that he collaborated with the ene
my while a prisoner of war in
Korea.
Liles is the first graduate of the
Military Academy lo (ace such i
charges. An Army Inwyur has been

help try him. Approximately 80
witnesses are standing by. Some
will appear for the Army, some
in Liles' behalf. The trial is ex
pected to last four weeks.
Released from a North Korean
prisoner of war camp mure than
two years ago, Liles said he was,

ly" so he would have a chance
to explain incidents that happened
five years ago.
"I'm quite sure I'll he able to
do it," the Fort Lewis special serv
ice officer added.
Liles, who wears the Legion of
Merit, the bronze star with oak
leaf and the soldier's medal, was
captured by Chinese Communists
