Harriman Slated
PORTLAND New York Gov.
Averell Harriman will speak in
Oregon Nov. 22 instead of in De
cember as announced earlier,
Democratic State Chairman How
ard Morgan reported here.
He said the change in dales naa
been made by the Democratic Na
tional Committee to insure Harri
man an opportunity to talk with
all parly workers. His schedule in
December was too full to permit
that. Morgan said.
However, Monroe Sweetland,
Democratic national committee
man who has been feuding with
Moreen on a number of party is
sues, said he had been told by
Harriman's office that the gover
nor's talk in Oregon never had
been scheduled for Dec. 22 the
date announced earlier by Morgan.
Sweetland added that in the fu
ture, speaking engagements by
Democrats will be handled by a
committee on which both he and
Morgan will serve.
Harriman's new schedule, as an
nounced by Morgan, calls for the
'Dummy' Solution
Used Successfully
As Anaesthetic
SAN KHANC1SCO 11 A Chi
cago medical researcher reported
this week he had successfully
anaesthetized some people for
tooth pulling with a physically in-
active "dummy" solution.
In a test on 200 patients who
were deceived into believing that
i they were getting a real anaesthe
tic! IS were sufficiently "drugged"
to undergo extractions, some of
them involving impacted teeth.
; Dr. Stanley C. Harris, professor
of physiology and pharmacology
at Northwestern University Dental
.School, reported the results to the j
American Dental Assn.
Dr. Harris said probably 40 per
cent of all people suffering from
pain could gel relief through
"dummy" anaesthetics.
In another report Dr. Loren R.
Borland of San Francisco said
fear of dentists among children
often is due to what they have
heard from their parents about the
pain involved in dental treatment.
Sonic of these youngsters are so
scared, he said, that it is doubtful
whether the dental work should be
done. He added that there were
cases during war time when serv
ice men took court martials rather
than submit to dental treatment.

governor to arrive in Portland the
night of Nov. 21. He will confer
with Democratic leaders and on
the next day drive to Eugene for a
talk before University of Oregon
students and a fund-raising meet
ing. Later he will return to Clacka

Oregon City.
Harriman recently has been
mentioned as a possinie uemocrai

Last week Morgan criticized
some of Harriman's backers for
what he said was their methods
in attempting to gain the nomina

Morgan said that he will see
to it that Harriman gets to talk
to as many party workers as pos

Inexpensive Plywood Bins Reduce Poultry
Low-cost plywood bins for handl
ing poultry feed are setting a new
jbusines pace throughout the west.
Substantial reductions in feed
costs with this method are re
ported by the U. S. Department of
I Agriculture, un me oasis of a na
: tional survey. USD A estimates the
i savings to farmers as ranging
l irom $t to 58 a ton.
I In many instances, the new sys-
'tem permits farmers to turn old
feed storage areas into housing
I for additional birds. Farmers op
erating on improved business prin
j ciples recognize that this pays for
the initial investment. Savings in
jtime or hired-hand labor costs are
'even more impressive.
Looks Good To Farmers
I All this makes bulk handling of
j feed look good to farmers. It's
even more attractive to feed sup
! pliers who save lahor costs in de
livery and the handling involved in
sacking.

i for one or more bins.
I With this in mind, plywood
' manufacturers have developed a
; basic plan for a 144-cu.-ft. b i n
i and a 288-cu.-ft. bin.
Kenneth Bergman at Summit
illill farm, Puyailup, Wash., built
one of the first test bins in coop
jeration with the Washington Co
operative Association, which has
done considerable research in bulk
: handling of feed. Economies re
ported by Bergman are spectacu
lar. Before he installed his first
j two bins, he had been hand-feed
ing 6.500 laying hens. The job took
two men an hour every morning.
Bulk feed bins and automatic
feeders cut that job time to 20
minutes for one man.
