Interrupted Prowlers
Beat Eugene Man, Flee
EUGENE un The inter-communications
system at a bowling
alley gave away two would-be
burglars Sunday night, but they
made a get-away after beating an
employe.
Charles Hansen, 48, who lived
near the bowling alley at Benton
Lane Park, 20 miles north of here,
heard voices coming over the
inter-com. He picked up a sawed
off pool cue and rushed to the
bowling alley where he found one
man crouching near a wall. Hansen
hit the man with the cue but was
surprised by a companion. The two
men attacked Hansen.
They fled when John Sutton,
owner of the bowling alley,
arrived. He also lived nearby and
heard the commotion.
Hansen was treated at Junction
City hospital for cuts and bruises
to the face, head, shoulders and
hand.

He indicated he thought Truman,
Gov. Averell Harriman of New
York and Carmine DeSapio, a high
Democratic Party leader" in New
York, might be engineering such a
plan.
Harriman has been prominently
mentioned as a possible nominee,
and was host to Truman over the
weekend at Albany.
Asked Tuesday if there were a
"plot" to dump Stevenson, Tru
man replied:
"None whatsoever both are able
men and friends of mine. I am
not trying to run the Democratic
convention. I twill take care of
itself."
Accreditation
Lack May Affect
Oregon Students
PORTLAND I Lack of
accreditation for Portland State
College may mean that 75 students
who will graduate this spring in
education will not be certified to
teach in Oregon schools.
The difficulty results from long
established policies of the North
west Assn. of Secondary and
Higher Schools, which does accred
iting, and the State Board of
Higher Education, which certifies
teachers.
The accrediting association's
policy is not to approve schools
that have been in operation for less
than one full year. Portland State
achieved degree granting status
with the State System of Higher
Education only last August.
The board of education has a
policy of certifying only students
from accredited schools.
Portland State President J. F.
Cramer offered a solution to the
problem. He suggested that the
association make a "trial evalu
ation" of the new college's elemen
tary teaching program and then
grant "restricted accreditation"
for one year. If this were done,
he said, the State Department of
Education then could approve the
elementary program and the
spring graduates could be certified
to teach.

The announcement added:
