Putting In New Gcs Stove Proves Big Task In London
LONDON on How many men
does it take to install one gas
stove?
The London Daily Express, cam
paigning for more efficiency in
Britain, asked that question Tues
day and then went on to tell of
one case where it took 23 men to
put a stove in a store.
According to V. B. Wilkinson,
who runs a London hardware store,
this is what happened when he
asked the local government-run
Gas Board for a new stove.
An inspector called, looked at
the old stove and agreed to the
request. Two men arrived to de
liver the new cooker. Two days
later; two men arrived to fit it.
Later, another two men called and
took the old stove away.

Meanwhile, the men fitting the
new cooker aeciaea mat a new
meter was needed. A man arrived
with a new meter. Two more
men called to connect it. Another
man also called to take away the
old meter.
It was then decided that the
pipes needed blowing out. Three
men drove up in a truck and set
to work with a compressor unit.
After a morning's work they de
cided the stoppage was not within
the building, but must be under
the sidewalk or road.
Fourteen men so far.
At .this point an inspector ar
rived with a colleague. They sur
veyed the situation. Then, one

Zoo Keeper Estimates
Wrong On Penguin Hatch
VANCOUVER, B. C. U1 Zoo
curator Alan Best said Tuesday
he had erred in estimating the
hatching time of a king penguin
egg at Vancouver's Stanley Park.
"I estimated the date of hatch
ing would be Oct. 5 but now I
learn with authority that we can
expect the happy event on Sept.
97 " Roct cnit
Meanwhile, Matilda who's do
ing the hatching is still balancing
the big egg on her toes near her
breast, waiting for Canada s first
king penguin birth.
Beneath Matilda is a thick rub
ber pad placed there by zoo offi
cials as a precautionary measure
in case the penguin drops the egg.

A new section of pipe was in
stalled and for nearly a year
everything was peaceful.
Then, Wilkinson reports, the
other day a man dropped in. He
announced he would be there the
following Thursday to paint the
pipes.
"What pipes?"
"The new gas pipes, of course,"
was the reply.
And he was No. 23.
Said The Express editorial:
"Can anyone beat that for a record
of over-employment?"
There was no comment from the
Gas Board.

Baldock Blames
Selfish Politics
For Bill Failure
SALEM HI State Highway En
gineer R. H. Baldock blamed
"politics" Tuesday for the failure
of Congress to pass highway legis
lation and said the federal law
makers could take a lesson from
the Oregon Legislature.
' The state Leeislature in 1951
and 1953 increased the gas tax,
doubled the plate fees on passen
ger cars, increased the weight
mile tax on trucks and authorized
the issuance of $72 million in
hoods," Baldock told members of
the Salem Kiwanis Club at a
luncheon meeting.
Durine the eieht-vear nerind
from 1947 to and includine 1955.
Baldock said Oregon will have ex
pended $251 million for roads.
"This amount of money will en
able Oregon to clean uo the back
log of critical deficiencies and to
take care of the current deprecia
tion," Baldock said.
He said that more mnnev. either
federal or state, will be needed to
Keep pace witlt the state s growing
highway construction and main
tenance needs.
Referring to the failure of Con
gress to pass a road bill during
the last session, Baldock said, "Un
fortunately, this was the first time
a road bill has entered into parti
san politics. After all. the nroblem
is one of economics rather than
one of politics."
He quoted from the August issue
of Engineering News-Record which
said editorially, "Kepublicans and
Democrats share the blame equal
ly. Both played selfish politics and
both bowed to lobbyist pressure."

from $6.21 a week ago and $6.65 a
year ago. This week's figure was
the lowest since Feb. 3, 1953, when
It was $6.13.
The index represents the total

No particular food accounted for
the drop. It was simply that many
more went down than up. Lower
were flour, wheat, rye, hams, bel
lies, sugar, cottonseed oil, tea,
eggs, potatoes, rice, raisins, cur
rants, prunes, steers,- hogs and
lambs. Up were corn, oats, butter,
