Neuberger Raps
Indian Timber's
Inferior Prices
WASHINGTON Sen. Neu
berger (D-Ore) said this week
members of a Senate Indian af
fairs subcommittee "still haven't
found out, to our satisfaction, the
reason why Indian timber frequent
ly sells for about half the price of
Forest Service timber."
He declared the group "is going
to keep at the matter until we
get to the bottom of this dispar
ity." Neuberger recently charged In a
Senate speech that hemlock on the
Quinault Indian Reservation in
Washington State is being sold for
$6.65 to $13 a thousand board feet
while other hemlock on nearby
public lands brings up to 11,
He said conferences have been
held with Bureau of Indian Affairs
officials. Whether a hearing will j
be held in the field on the matter,
he said, will depend upon the de
rision of Sen. O'Mahoncy (D
Wvo), subcommittee chairman.
Neuberger said he believes the
form of Indian land timbor con
tracts "probably needs a good deal
of changing in order to nrotect
both the government and the In
dian families on such reservations
as the Quinault, the Klamath and
others."

Atom Peace Ship Given House Okay
- I
. ? "ife
WASHINGTON UH The House 1
voted this week to authorize a
start on a newly designed mer
chant mp to be driven by atomic
energy and UJ serve, as the model
tor a nuclear powerca u.b. mer
chant marine.
A voice vote sent the bill to the
Senate, where it could become
vehicle for authorizing the atomic
"peace ship" which President Ei
senhower has urged as a dramatic
demonstration of tins nation s in
terest in peaceful uses of the atom.
Many Democrats and some Re
publicans have opposed this plan
the Senate already has voted it
down once as one which would
result in a "showboat" but which
would not advance nuclear know
how. The bill approved by the House
would authorize the Maritime Ad
ministration to construct an ex
perimental commercial vessel that
could carry both passengers ond
cargo in normal shipping business.
Estimates are that the project will
require from 5 to 10 years.
The Atomic Energy Commission
in a letter cleared bv the Pros!
dent's Rudgct Bureau, had opposed
the House bill as "premature." It
said construction oi such a vessel
proposed "should be preceded by
a thorough lcasimmy stuuy,"
ICC Orders Will Ease
Freight Car Shortage
SALEM im The Governor's
Emergency Transportation Com-1
mittee was told this week that the
Interstate Commerce Commission
has issued two orders aimed at
easing the freight car shortage in
Oregon.
One of the orders permits a rail
road no more than seven days for
loading or unloading a car at a
port, ,
the other prohibits an unloading
stop in transit unless at least 1,500
board feet of lumber are unloaded.
The committee joined Charles H.
Hcltzel, state public utilities com
missioner, in urging the ICC to in
crease daily rental rates for freight j
cars held away irom home yards.
1 he committee said such a step
might help matters since railfirms
would be eager to return each oth
ers' cars to avoid the extra ex
pense.
