Paying For Home 'Just Like Rent' Costliest Plan
By SAM DAWSON
NEW YORK Wl The easier
the mortgage payments are on
your current budget the more
money you'U have to put out be
fore you finally get full title to
your home.
Lending agencies are starting to
stress that paying for a home
"just like rent" costs more in in
terest payments over the years.
One a $10,000 loan a veteran can
save himself more than $3,000 by
taking out a 20-year mortgage in
stead of a 30-year one the North
western National Life Insurance
Co. of Minneapolis notes.
OR, put another way, on each
$1,000 down payment you can
manage to put up, you can save
over $800 in interest payments on
a 30-year program, or more than
$500 in interest payments on a 20
year schedule.
Many families who'd like a home
of their own, or a larger house
for a growing brood, are discus
sing today how best to finance it.
The problem: they can save in
terest payments in the long run
by taking the 20-year payment
plan instead of the 30-year one
but their monthly payments in the
meantime will be about $12.50
higher. And they may want to use
that $12.50 toward payments on
the refrigerator or stove.
Committing themselves to buy
ing a house "just like rent" may
be the only way they can afford
one on their present income. So
they decide to run the risk of their
WILDLIFE MISTAKE
DALLAS Wl About six weeks
ago Mrs. Margie Lyons found a
shivering, soaking - wet puppy on
the street.
She took it home, gave it the
best of food and medicine, and
watched happily as her new pet
tried to make friends with her
tiny Chihuahua.
This week Mrs. Lyons took her
two dogs to a veterinarian foi
their rabies vaccinations. It was
then she learned her new pet is

income dropping in the future and
thus making payments a burden,
or of their moving to another city
and leaving behind a house In
which their equity may be tiny.
"Easy Payment" Popular
The insurance company notes
that under a 20-year payment plan
on a $10,000 deal, all borrowed,
they would in 10 years have piad
off alwut $3,900 in principal. It
says that under a 30-year sched
ule, their payments on principal
in the first 10 years would be about
$2,000.
The easy payment plans grow
in popularity, however. The Vet
erans Administration reports that
43 per cent of the GI plan loans
now being made are the no-down-payment
type. And the percentage
of the longer maturities has dou
bled in the last two years.
The total of mortgage debt out
standing mounts as the housing
boom continues most places un
checked. Since the end of the war
the amount has increased four
fold and crossed the 75 billion dol
lar mark as 1955 started.

Magazine Settles
Big Libel Action
HOLLYWOOD ( Actor Jamea
Mason and his wife, Pamela Kel
lino, Tuesday announced an out.
of court cash settlement of their
$1,199,000 libel suit against Rava
Magazine.
The amount of the settlement
was not disclosed. The Masons'
attorney, Paul Caruso, said it must
be paid within the next nine
months.
The magazine also will print a
retraction of its previous story on
the Masons, Caruso said. The Ma.
sons contended that the article in
the March issue of the magazine
accused them of immoral con
duct and was maliciously false and
degrading. ,
Caruso said the settlement was
not large but represented "a tre
mendous victory for Hollywood
people" and "a sign that the trend
toward destroying character must
stop."
In New York, a representative
of the defendants said the settle'
mcnt was for $1,000.
