GENEVA I President Eisen
hower operated an atomic re
search reactor Wednesday, He sat
at the control panel of the reactor
at United Nations European head
quarters shortly before going to
the summit conference.
The reactor has been assembled
by the U. S. Atomic Energy Com
mission for display in connection
with an international atomic con
ference next month.
Eisenhower was fascinated by
operation of the research reactor,
known as the "swimming pool"
type. It Is similar to one which he
inspected last month at Pennsyl
vania State University, where his
youngest brother, Milton, is president.
Eisenhower walked from the
' pool ' to the reactor control room
and sat down at a panel full ot
pushbuttons.
A. guide explained how the react
or operates and invited Eisenhow
er to put it into action. When the
President pushed the starter but
ton bells clanged and indicators
in the control room showed the
reactor rods were being immersed
in the "pool."
"What are we making pluton
ium or what?" the President in
quired. The guide said some plutonium
was being produced, "but mostly
waste fissionable materials."
As he watched the automatic
indicators, Eisenhower laughed and
said that reminded him of a ther
mometer which he had to watch
when he worked in a creamery ai
a boy at Abilene, Kan.
"If I ever let that thing get a
degree too much, oh, brother, 1
was in trouble," Eisenhower said.
He noted that 24 nations of the
free world already have signed
agreements with the United State
for participation in A m e r i c a'l
atome-for-peace program.
