here Wednesday with reports of
church growth.

ceived $2,538,000 in contributions
the past 12 months. That was an
increase of $385,043 over the pre
vious year.
Value of buildings in the Oregon
conference was given as $12,346,
788, an increase of $991,370.
Oregon's 173 Methodist churches
have 47,818 members, an increase

Named To Make
Visit To Russia

man, Wash., as one of 12 United
Slates farmers and agricultural ex
perts to visit Russia this summer
was announced Wednesday.
A second Pacific Northwest man
named by the Department of Agri
culture is J. M. Kleiner of Nampa,
Idaho., a farmer, packer and dis
tributor of agricultural products,
who has interests in both Port
land and Salem, Ore.
Clark is a Southeastern- Wash
ington wheat farmer and along
time Republican member of the
Washington Mate Legislature.
The group will visit Russia under
an exchange plan which will bring
a Russian group to the United
States. The idea came from a Des
Moines Register and Tribune edi
torial suggestion that Russian
farmers should be given a chance
to see how Iowa corn and hogs
grow. It met with acceptance in
the Kremlin. An Iowa congress
man said six Iowans have been
named tc the group.
Kleiner is a native of Russia
who came to the United States in
1915 with $2.39 in his pocket and
now owns several creamery and
poultry plants as well as a farm.
Kleiner owns the Columbia Prod
uce Co. in Portland and the Amer
ican Poultry and Provision Co. at
Salem in addition to his Idaho
holdings.
He landed in Seattle at the age
of 23 and worked for a creamery
at Sookane for a time on his climb
un the economic ladder. He visited
Russia with his family twice
before World War II.

Senate Crushes Resolution

WASHINGTON 0B The Scnat,
Wednesday crushed the resolution
by Sen. McCarthy (R-Wis) aimed
at forcing the Big Four confer
ence to discuss the status of Soviet
satellite states.
The roll call vote was 77-4.
The action climaxed .1 stormy
session in which the Senate re
buffed efforts of McCarthy to
amend or withdraw his resolution.
It also shouted down a proposal
by Sen. Jcnner (R-Ind) to amend
the McCarthy proposal.
The Jenner substitute sought to
place the Senate on record only
as expressing "its full support of
any and all efforts of the Presi
dent" to "confirm" U.S interest in
the plight of the caotive nations
behind the Iron Curtain.
Low Bidder Announced
For New Air Base Hangar
SEATTLE I Donald M. Brake
Co. of Portland was the apparent
low bidder Tuesday for an alert
hangar and other buildings at the
Klamath r ails Air Ba'e.
The firm's bid was $628,521. The
Navy announced, after opening of
six bids here, that the award prob
ablv will be made shortly.
The second low bid was by Teller
Construction Co., Portland, for
$654,000. In addition to the hangar
the bid covers a training building,
a rocket storage building and two
storage igloos.

Include: June 27, for rehabilitation
pf bachelor officers' quarters; Juno
28, for construction 01 a mess hall
and fire station.

agreed Wednesday to seek a mod
ified teen-age volunteer training
program to bolster President Ei
senhower's stalemated military re
serve bill.
With one eye on congressional
critics, the subcommittee decided
to consider later Wednesday three
separate proposals designed to en
courage teen-agers li volunteer
for six months' special training
and reserve duty.
Bethlehem Steel
Assures Increase
PITTSBURGH in Bethlehem
Steel Corp this week joined 'Big
Steel" in a promise for a wage
increase to the CIO United Steel
workers. But Bethlehem said it first must
work out with the union the amount
of a wage increase. Vice President
James M. Larkin, head of the
firm's negotiating committee, said:
"We came here to work out a
settlement fair to all concerned.
We're going to be discussing what
the wa increase should be."
Monday U.S. Steel Corp., the
pacesetter for the industry, said it
will submit a wage offer to the
union later this week.
Talks between Bethlehem', the
nation's second largest producor,
and the union resumed after a two
week recess. Republic Steel Corp.
resumes talks with the union Tues
day afternoon.
Nehru, Soviet Agreement
Reported To Be Signed
MOSCOW un The Russians an
nounced a declaration worked out
by visiting Indian Prime Minister
Nehru and the Soviet government
is being "ceremoniously signed"
in the Kremlin Wednesday.
The Foreign Ministry's press de
partment, in issuing the announce
ment, did not specify the nature of
the declaration or say when the
text would be published.
Western correspondents were In
vited to witness the signing.
Nehru was host at a reception
for Russian leaders and the Mos
cow diplomatic corps before the
signing.
He is scheduled to leave Moscow
by air Thursday after a 16-day
visit to Russia.

.compromise bill, proposed that it
be amended by permitting youths
under ID years to escape draft duty
and reduce the age of their mili
tary obligation by volunteering for
the reserves and six months' ac
tive training. , i
This and two alternate proposals,
all aimed at building up the size
of the reserves, were referred to
Pentagon officials for comment.
The subcommittee also decided:
1. To recommend that President
Eisenhower be given authority to
recall into active service up to one
million active reservists, without
reference to Congress, in a presi-dentially-dedared
emergency.
2. Ts lower the total period of
obligation for active and reserve
duty to six years. Instead of the
present eight. This was decided,
subject to later review, by a 7-4
vote.
Rep. Powell (D-NY) had said
earlier Wednesday that House lead
ers were trying to force through a
"dishonest" compromise reserve
bill that, would bypass his anti
segregation amendments.
