Dennett Tells Of Communist
Infiltration Of Pension Fund
SEATTLE IM Ex-Commuiust
Eugene V. Dennett said Saturday
the Reds seized t "political oppor
tunity" to infiltrate and control the
Washington Pension Union in the
late 1930s.
As the Seattle ateelworker con
tinued testimony before a House
un-American activities subcommit
tee, members said he w.is divulg
ing so much new information about
the Communist Party that another
hearing may be necessary here
next June.
Dennett discussed the Pension
Union after he said in earlier testi
mony that the Communists used
unemployed citizens' groups, wa
terfront organizations and the once
politically-potent Washington Com
monwealth Federation to win sup
port for policies dictated from the
Soviet Union.
The witness was asked Satur
day to clarify testimony he gave
Friday that Harry Lundeberg.
head ot the Sailors' Union of the
Pacific, had attended Communist
meetings in Seattle during the mid
1930s. Lundeberg, known now as a
strong anti-Communist, had denied
attending meetings.
"I simply mentioned," Denett
explained, "that Mr Lundeberg
had attended a fraction (Commu
nist) meeting, and that was com
mon knowledge. I at no time ac
cused him of being a Communist"
Dennett said Saturday that Er
nest Fox, whom he described as
Lundeberg's top assistant, "in
formed me that Lundeberg had
attended top fraction meetings"
Dennett said cuts in old-age re
lief grants about 1936 led to for
mation of the Pension Union.
He said Howard Costigan, then
executive secretary of the Com
monwealth Federation and listed
by Dennett as a Communist Party
member, made a radio address
inviting protests from pensioners.
A mass meeting followed, Dennett
said, and Costigan suggested for
mation of a committee.
Costigan asked the Communist
Party for help, Dennett related,
and the party assigned the late
William J. Pennock to assist Cos
tigan. Pennock, who became head
of the Pension Union, committed
suicide while defendant in Smith
Act trials here in 19S3.
Dennett said Communists also
assigned former state Sen. Tom
Rabbitt to help win control of the
Pension Union.
Rabbitt invoked the Fifth
Amendment in declining to tell the
committee last June whether he
ever had engaged in Communist
activity.

Yalta Compilers Stuck
Close To Notes On Meet
WASINGTON Wl The Stale
Department officials who compiled
the Yalta papers said Saturday
they rejected many documents but
stuck scrupulously close to avail
able notes on the actual meeting
sessions.
These officials, who worked on
the Yalta project for years, made
the statement in response to ques
tions about criticism concerning
the factual fullness of the report,
made public this week as the
American record of the wartime
Yalta conference.
British Prime Minister Church
ill, the last surviving member of
the Big Three who met at Yalta
in 1945, has complained he found
serious mistakes" in press ab
stracts of the record.
Republican and Democratic
members of Congress also have
traded critical words over the re
port, and there have been some
objections that documents were
suppressed or edited.
