ducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Goossens, 61 and British-born,
conducted orchestras in Rochester
and Cincinnati before coming to
Australia eight years ago from the
United States.

Yoncalla Scouts Observe Birthday

Boy Scout Pack 44 was honored
at a Blue and Gold dinner at the
Yoncalla Grade School lunchroom
recently in commemoration of
the 45th anniversary of Scouting.
Blue and gold streamers were
used in decorating the room. Mrs.
Lloyd Mauus made the large two
tiered cake, decorated vn blue and
gold with the words "Happy Birt
day Cub Scouts." Den 3 had a
large centerpiece for each table,
representing cub scouts forming
"the living circle." Dens 1 and 4
made place cards of marshmal
lows in shape of carts which had
life savers for wheels and were
drawn by animal cookies. Den 1
had place cards for the parents
made of pipe cleaners representing
Cub Scouts.
Bob Cat pins were given to
Charles Woody, David Bloomquist
and William Stribling; Lions pins
to Mike Ma this and Dick Thiel:
a gold arrow, two silver arrows
and a gold star for three years
in Cub Scouts.
Mike Mathis and Dick Thiol
demonstrated the making of a
three-strand rope from six lengths
of binding twine. Den i put on
two skits, one acting out the ac
tive life and trades of George

rison, 111. No date has been set
for the wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Phillips
of Hayhurst Valley had as their
guests last week Mrs. Naomi Is-
gar and Mrs. Grace Miley of
Boise, Idaho. Mrs. Isgar's broth
er was fatally injured in an auto
mobile accident recently. Mr. and
Mrs. Marion Wells of Junction
City were guests at the Wayne
Phillips home Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Bernard of
California visited friends snd rel
atives here last week. They were
called to Oregon due to the death
of Mrs. Bernard's brother, Dr. De
Lapp of Roseburg.
Guests at the Edna Miller home
last week included Mr. and Mrs.
W. H. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. James
Jones and son of Chico, Calif.
Mrs. James Madden and family
visited at the parental Henry
lubbell home last week. Mr. and
Mrs. Madden are "moving to Med
ford in the near future.

Foreign Affairs: The resident
has signed a resolution underscor
ing his authority to commit U. S.
forces to the defense of the For
mosa area. The Senate has ratified
a mutual assitance treaty with
Formosa.
Military: The House has passed
and sent to the Senate bills to ex
tend the draft law four years and
raise the pay of military person
nel. The Senate has not acted on
either measure.
Veterans: The President has
signed a bill continuing eligibility
of veterans for GI educational ben
efits, if they were in service by
Jan. 31.
Reciprocal Trad: The House has
passed and sent to the Senate a
bill continuing the reciprocal trade
program three years and allowing
the president to cut tariffs. The
Senate Finance Committee is con
sidering the bill.
. School Construction: Legislation
to provide federal aid for school
construction is pending in the Sen
ate and House Education and La
bor committees.
Statehood: The House Interior
Committee has approved a' bill to
admit both Alaska and Hawaii to
statehood There has been no
House or Senate action.
Pay Raises: The President has
signed a bill raising the pay of
congressmen and federal judges,
the increase for congressmen be
ing $7,500 a year. The House Civil
Service Committee has approved
a bill to raise the pay of postal
employes.
Postal Rates: Legislation to in
crease postal rates, including a
one-cent boost in letter-mailing
costs, is pending In the House
Postoffice Committee.
Wages: Bills to boost the mini
mum wage from 75 cents to 90
cents or more are pending In Sen

A representative from the Ore
gon State Tax Commission will be
in Canyonville at the city hall
March 28 to help taxpayers in pre
paring their returns. No charge
will be made for this service.
Mrs. Loson Winn had a letter
from Mrs. Victor Shaw of Med
ford in which Mrs. Shaw said she
and her foster son, A. S. Schroe
der, were driving to Cottage Grove
Monday to the funeral of Mr.
Schroeder's own father who died
in Missouri recently. This is the
first word Schroeder had had of
his father in years, having made
his home with the Shaws since in
fancy.
Recent callers at the Loson
Winn home were the Bill Bowden
family, formerly of Myrtle Creek,
well-known m the vicinity. They
now live at Empire and were on
the way home from Williams
where they had been visiting their
older daughter who is married
and lives there.
The Gordon Harry family cele
brated daughter Ann" 16th birth
day Saturday nieht with a dinner
at Ford' Cafe followed by an eve
nni in the local theater.
The Rebekah treated the Odd
Fellows to a ham dinner Saturday
nisht at the IOOF hall. About 20

Stanley was awarded the door

Frank Ramey of Canyonville
suffered two fractured ribs in a
bulldozer accident near Canyon-
vill last week. He was clearing
land, and while climbing around
his machine, slipped and fell over
the blade. He was treated at t or
est Glen Hospital and discharg
ed the following Monday.
