Matusow Believes He's Safe
In Regard To Withdrawing
Testimony On Communists
"WASHINGTON Ul tt'i r v e y
Matusow said hero that his law
yers had advised him the govern
ment would, find it difficult to con
vict him of perjury despite hli ad
mitted lying under oath.
He also told questioning senators
that he would fight any perjury
charge unless the government al
so indicted , other professed ex-
Communists he has accused of
wearing to falsehoods. -. .
"It the government just Mes to
make me the scapegoat, I'm go
ing to ngnt it," the 28-year-old
Matusow said after Sen. McClel
lan (D-Ark) asked him. If he in
tended to pay his "debt to society"
by pleading guilty to any perjury
charge.
Matusow acknowledged that at
torneys for 13 second string Com
munist leaders had prepared for
him a memorandum listing ma
terial testimony he gave at the
1953 trial at which they were con
victed on conso'racv charies.
Sen. Eastland (D-MIss) demand
ed to know if this memorandum i
was not a list of things the lawyers
for the Red leaders wanted him to
recant. .

, "I don't know what they wanted
me to recant," Matusow replied
vehemently. "I don't care. I am
just recanting what the falsehoods
wore." (
Matusow was a witness at a fed
eral court hearing last week on a
new trial motion filed by the Com
munist leaders. He said in an af
fidavit that he gave false testi
mony against them.
In other highlights of the Senate
hearings: -
1. Matusow said he would turn
over for college scholarships aU
the money he made on his forth
coming book "False Witness", ex
cept for what he had to use In his
"legal defense." This was after
McClcllan accused him of trying
to "commercialize", on his turn
about testimony.
2. Matusow swore that he had
offered to give congressional candi
dates in the elections last Novem
ber "matnrlal that would expose
the lies of McCarthyism."
Toatifvlnif hofnrn the Sprint in.
tcrnal security subcommittee, Mat-'
usow did not say immediately
whether any candidates accepted
his offer to furnish such material'
"without compensation." ,
He said he had telephoned Jack
Anderson, a reporter for columnist
Drew Pearson, in March 1954 tell
ing him of the offer because he
thought Anderson "might know who
might be attacked" in the cam
paign by Sen. McCarthy (R-Wis).
He said he had hoped Anderson
would pass on the information to
candidates. Presumably it would
have been of interest chiefly to
Democrats. McCarthy supported
all GOP candidates last year ex
cept Clifford Case who won elec
Hon to the Senate from New
Jersey.
Matusow, who testified Monday
that he had "lied for money" as
witness against hundreds of per
sons, is being questioned by the
subcommittee in its efforts to show
where the truth is in many con
flicting stories Matusow has told.
In this second day of his testi
mony at the public hearing, Mat
usow stuck to testimony he gave
Monday to the effect that Miss
Elizabeth Bentlcy, a professed for
mer Communist, had told him she
also lied as a government witness
against accused Reds.
He told of a dinner engagement
with Miss Bentley in New York
City on Oct. 3, 1952, but never
did quote her as telling him on
that occasion that she had lied.
