I REPORT CARD PANEL
DISCUSSION HELD
'at ujh DiiD.tuiuruceTCB
A small but enthusiastic crowd
attended the Wilbur Winchester
PTA meeting Thursday at Win
chester school. A flag salute was
led by Larry Lane, Boy Scout, and
Mrs. M. D. McKay read an article
on prayer.
Howard Brothers reported for
the committee that met with the
head teachers of the schools to
determine what items the PTA
would purchase. The association
approved the purchase of building
block set and public address sys
tem for the Winchester School,
and 2 radios, 2 phonographs and
track suits for the Wilbur School.
According to Ted Ritter, scout
master, a potluck dinner is plan
ned for Feb. 28 at the Winchester
School to celebrate the first birth
day of the. troop. A short talk on
scout activities was also given by
Earl Ladd. , ,, .
Mrs. Olive Blondell mnounced
the home talent show Mar. 4 by
the Wilbur Community Club at
Wilbur. Mrs. McKay asked coop
eration of the community in the
forthcoming rummage sa!o to be
given by the Band Boosters Assoc
iation at the Elks temple in Hose
burg Feb. 26. Any Wilbur or Win
chester band narent will accent
rummage, old records, etc. to be
sold.
Reports were made by Ben
Smith and Jim Hennebeck on the
standardization of the two schools.
Except for undersized classrooms
and a few minor details, both
schools are standard.
Plans for the March 10 meet
ing were given by Mrs. Burton
Holt, program chairman. The par
ents are to have complete charge
of the meeting, Mrs. M. JJ. Mc
Kay, Mrs. Welby Leep and Mrs.
Leslie Moorhous were appointed to
prepare the program.
Mrs. Barnes, first grade teacher j
at Winchester, announced a sew
ing day soon for first grade moth
ers. They will make and stuff ani
mals for a school room zoo
The president, Mrs. Fred Bros
zlo, read a paper on Founder's
Day and an offering was taken.
Past presidents of the organiza
tion were acknowledged.
Mr. Smiths fourth grade room,
and Mrs. Fosters second grade
room tied for the room count.
An interesting panel, mediated
by Ben Smith, was held. The
problem discussed was report
cards. Ray Austin, first panel
member, agreed in part with the
present card system, commenting
that former cards produced com
petition between children, while
those used now reported the childs
own abilities.
Bob Borland thought the present
cards give a feeble report, need
ing support from the "purple puz
des" enclosed with them. This was
his own description of the mimeo
graphed attitude sheets sent out
with the report cards. Jim Henne
beck, head teacher of Wilbur,
stated that no report card could
do the work of a parent-teacher
conference.
In summary, Earl LadJ, subur
ban supervisor of District No. 4,
agreed with Hennebecks state
ment, and added that a report
card is only an expression of how
the individual teacher fee's toward
the child. This feeling varies as
the teachers moods and the childs
actions vary.
A volley of questions from the
audience brought interesting an
swers. The room mothers of Mrs. Fos
ters room served refreshments at
a table prettily decorated in the
Valentine mtoif.
An executive meeting of the or
ganization is scheduled for Wed.,
Mar. 2, at the Winchester School
