12-Point Recipe
To Spread School
Relations Given
By LAURA OLSON
Staff Writer, Newt-Review
The classroom teacher Monday
was termed "education's front
line in education" by Jr. Elmo
Stevenson, president of Southern
Oregon College at Ashland.
Dr. Stevenson was "kickoff"
speaker for School District 4't
Teachers' Inservice Workshop. The
workshop was held Monday for the
206 teachers of the district.
The genial speaker told instruc
tors: "You have a lot of relations
pupils, parents, relatives, col
leagues and community residents."
He handed out a 12-point recipe
to help relations.
The points included: (1) Priase
to those deserving, (2) use of the
individual's name, (3) enabling a
student to have success in a field
he excells in, (4) enthusiasm for
work (the teachers), (5) making
studies worthwhile for students,
(6) personalized reports jf student
progress, (7) good appearance of
teachers "clothes and person
ality," (8) courtesy, (9) elimina
tion of "I" strain in speaking; (10)
placing persons where -hey may
guide or advise others, (11) in
terest in others and (12) making
a job worthwhile.
Dr. btevenson said public schools
no longer have a monopoly over
the education media in America.
He cited motion pictures, televis
ion and radio as other educational
forces. All were competing, he
continued.
The competition, Stevenson said,
has confused "our objectives."
Should Reach More People
The speaker urged instructors to
"not only reach the 62 per cent of
Americans who are parents, but
to also reach the 38 per cent who
are not. "It was another way of
aiding home, school and commu
nity relations, he said.
"Our profession is different from
all other professions," he said ear
lier. "Every single parent is (also)
a teacher in some way. ' Thirty
per cent of the parents ha 'e taught
school at one time, he added. It
was, he said, "often a sad part."
The parents may have taught 30
years ago "when methods were
different."
Dr. Stevenson was introduced by
District 4 Supt. M. C. Deller who
referred to him as president of
the "little Harvard of the hills
and proud of it."
A panel discussion on "Oppor
tunities for Good Reading" follow
ed the Stevenson speach. Panel
members were: Miss Muriel
Mitchell, Roseburg Public Librari
an; Frank Scioscia, J. K. GiU Co.
representative; Mrs. Marilyn
Woodrich, housewife; and Dr. Stev
enson. Remaining sessions of the
workshop were devoted o various
meetings.
Dr. Marvin Smith presided over
sessions in Roseburg High' School
auditorium.
