Postal Rates: Legislation to In
crease postal rates, including a
one-cent boost in letter-mailing
costs, is pending in the House Post
office Committee.
Taxes: The House Ways and
Means Committee is expected soon
to recommend continuance of war
time excise and corporate tax
rates due to decrease in April.
Wages: A bill to boost the mini
mum wage from 75 cents to 90
cents or more is pending in the
House Labor Committee.
Farm Prices: The House Agri
culture Committee has started
hearings on a bill to restore farm
prices props to 90 per cent of
parity.
McCarthy Claims Democrat Senator Accepted Red Gift
WASHINGTON ( Sen. McClel
lan (D-Ark) says he has asked and
received the resignation of investi
gator Charles Tracy, but knowt
nothing of a report that fracy had
information linking a Democratic
senator with a campaign contribu
tion from a Communist.
Sen. McCarthy (R-Wis) said in
Milwaukee that a Democratic
senator whom he refused to name
had knowingly received $300 from
a Communist Party official on the
West Coast. He said Tracy had
"stumbled onto" the information
and was being fired as a result.
But McClcllan said he had
advised , six subcommittee staff
members who had worked under
McCarthy that "they would not be
recommended for confirmation" in
their old jobs, because "I didn't
I want to retain them, period."
"four of them have tendered
their resignations, including Tracy"
McClellan said. "I don't snow what
information Tracy may have given
Sen. McCarthy. It certainly wasn't
made known to me."
McCarthy, in Milwaukee for an
address Sunday night, said in an
interview he had a photographic

unnamed senator, and added:
"There is no question this senator
knew from whom the money came
or what hij business was...
"I'm not going to name this man
until he has had the opportunity

Gaining Intensity
DETROIT 11 .The production
race in the auto industry is gaining
in intensity.
The industry's assembly lines
currently are rolling along at a
rate that if maintained throughout
tne year would account for more
than eight million new passenger
cars in 1955. It obviously will not
be maintained indefinitely.
owever, most industry experts
say high level production will con
tinue through the first and second
quarters of the year unless labor
troubles intervene. Generally the
experts are saying the assembly
plants will build 3 V million cars
in this year s January-June period.
The total for all of 1955 has been
variously estimated, at from 5 ,i
million to 5,800,000 cars, along with
about a million trucks. Unless (he
unexpected happens General Mo
tors, Ford and Chrysler will ac
count for 90 per cent of more of
the year's total.
Still to be introduced are Amer
ican Motors' Nash and Hudson
models,
Each of the latter has a new
208 horsepower V-8 eneine In some
of its larger units. The engine,
along with- an automatic transmis
sion, is being supplied by Packard
division of Studebaker-Packard.
Also to offer further competition
all down the line is a group of
new four-door hardtop convertibles.
