Questionnaires
For Farm Census
Co Out In Mail
Questionnaires for the 1954 cen
sus of agriculture are now in the
mail, it was announced today by
Field Supervisor Don C. Mote, Cor
vallis. The questionnaires are being
mailed from a central point with
the distribution timed so that re
port forms will arrive about a
week ahead of the date when enu
merators will begin the field can
vass. Advance mailing will prompt
farm operators to consult their
records before filling in answers
required by the questionnaires.
Thev should be ready for the cen
sus enumerators. This procedure
is designed to insure greater ac
curacy of reporting and to save
time for both farmer and enu
merator when the latter calls at
a farm.
. The census questionnaire is de
signed to provide information on
the number ana size ot iarms,
acreage and harvest of crops, live
stock production and inventories,
selected farm facilities and equip
ment, selected farm expenditures,
farm values and mortgage debt.
On the average, each farmer
will be asked about 100 questions,
many of which may be answered
imply "yes ' or "no."

Assistants Will
Meet Saturday
The fall meeting of the Douglas
County Student Library Assistants
is scheduled Saturday at 10 a.m.
at the Hoseburg Senior High
School, according to advisor Mrs.
Gladys Monger.
The meeting is expected to draw
representatives from all high
schools and junior highs In the
county. The workshop will feature
book mending. Demonstrating will
be Fred Brcwis from Gaylord
Bros. Publishing Co.
The purpose of the organization
is to (1) promote interchange of
ideas through association with oth
er student assistants, (2) increase
pupil interest and participation in
library work and (4) provide op
portunity for investigation of Ii
brarianship as a career. "

Robinson Jr. was fined $100 and
placed on probation for a year
after he pleaded guilty to a drunk
charge.
The actor's son is to be tried
Nov. 16 in Santa Monica Superior
Court on two charges of armed
robbery involving holdups of two
taxicab drivers. He is at liberty
on $10,000 bond in that case.
Justice Dept. Asks Interstate Segregation Ban
WASHINGTON Wl The Justice
Department said Tuesday the
time has come for the Interstate
Commerce Commission to issue a
flat ban on racial segregation of
Interstate travelers.
The department made its dec
laration in a ."friend of the court"
brief filed with the ICC, which
is considering a complaint by the
National Assn. for the Advance
ment of Colored People that many
railroads maintain discriminatory
regulations for handling white and
Negro passengers.
Seven railroads named in the
complaint also filed a joint briel

In Clash With Deer
DAYTON, Ore. W A 110-pound
buck deer sent an automobile ca
reening into a ditch, where it
caught fire, but both occupants es
caped with scratches near here
Monday night.
The deer, badly hurt, was killed
by another motorist.
Mrs. Gust Gustafson of Grand
Ronde was driving. Her husband
was riding in the front seat with
her. The deer darted in front of
the car which swerved and plunged
into an embankment across a
ditch, and broke into flames. The
Gustafsons, thrown into the back
seat, got out through a front door.
The deer was thrown into the
ditch beside the burning car. It
got to its feet, stumbled toward
the flames and collapsed. Me
motorist dispatched him with a car
jack. The car was destroyed.
