River lows past here and some
say it is 100 years wide.
On this, the southern side, is a
tradition of white supremacy and
racial segregation.
On the northern side the tradi
tion essentially is one of equality
and freedom, though discrimina
tion often exists, stemming from
community pressures rather than
the law.
The farther South you go from
the Ohio, the wider the river ap

from the ending of segregation,
especially in the public schools,
can be worked out with a Mini
mum of trouble.
Last May the U. S. Supreme
Court ruled unanimously that legal
segregation in the public schools
was discriminatory and hence un
constitutional. '
Since then the question for the
South has been how and when to
end segregation.
There is a widely shared theory
among race relations authorities
in the region that, generally speak
ing, segregation will be ended in
various localities at t rate in direct
proportion to the number of Ne
groes compared to the number of
whites.
The theory also holds that de
segregation will spread like rock
ripples in, a pond from the border
states southward again gener-

Everyone to whom I talked be
lieved the most orderly way would
be the admission of white and Ne
gro children to the same school
in the grammar school level "be
fore they have a chance to pick
up prejudices.'
Louisville has an estimated pop
ulation of 401,280 and roughly 16
per cent of the total is Negro
largely concentrated around the
heart of the city.
There is no segregation on pub
lic transportation. The city's li
braries are open to all. So is the
University of Louisville, which
draws is per cent of its operating
revenut from the city.
Negro firemen work and live in
the same stations as white fire
men. The city's hospital is open to
Negro nurse trainees. The city em
ploys Negro policemen. -
This summer Mayor Andrew
Broaddus announced henceforth
all city jobs would be open to
Negroes.
Louisville has never had any
major racial trouble. It has a long
recora or interracial cooperation.

they believe is simple justice for
the Negroes.

The Oregon Public Utilities Com
mission has approved a rate in
crease recently requested by the
Glendale Telephone Company.
The approval was granted fol
lowing a public hearing con
ducted by Commissioner Charles
H. Heltzell at the Glendale City
Hall on Aug. 25, according to cor
respondent Mrs. G. B. Fox.

Fat People Live
Longer Than
Normal Weights

people with high blood pressure
live longer than or at least
as long as people with normal
weight who suffer from the same
trouble, say three Danish doctors.
They reported this conclusion
after a study of 1,000 cases of
high blood pressure followed for
nearly 20 years. Their report was
made to the Stockholm WorM
Congress for Internal Medicine.
"The first remarkable finding in
this investigation was that so
many slill survive," Dr. Poul
Bechgaard, of the Arrhus Com
munal Hospital, Denmark, said.
He continued:
The high age among many of
the cases was another surprise.
Twenty years after they were
first found to suffer from high
blood pressure, 63 persons had
reached the age of 78 or mora.
And 25 were more than 80.
Many of those rccheeked after
20 years were "not seriously trou
bled by their high blood pressure
"and 60 had actually regained
normal blood pressure.
The highest mortality In high
blood pressure patients occurred
during the first two years, after
which time there was a downward
trend." The older the person! ob
served became, " the smaller
seemed the risk that they should
die from high blood pressure.

A small auxiliary sale of O 4 C
salvage limber on the Tiller-Trail
Boad drew no bids over the week
end. It will now come under the

The timber included 35.000 board
feet of Douglas fir appraised at
$5 a thousand and 4,000 feet of
sugar pine appraised at $20.10. To
tal appraised price was 55.40.
The tract will now be advertised
and then be put up for sale to any
bidder in a period of 90 days. The
timber can be sold for any pri
mary manufacturing in any O&C
marketing area now, according to
