that at the end of July about 1.100
persons in the county were affect
ed directly by the strikes. Two
hundred fifty, he said, returned to
work durinir the month.
The figure since has been re
duced to about 910 (during the
early days of this month.
The strike has had a fringe ef
fect on smaller mills in the coun
ty. They have been taking advan
tage of higher lumber prices to in
crease production by working as
many hors as possible.
Aside from the mills involved In
the labor disputes, Foster said, the
Roaeburg area apparently is at
its peak for employment at . the
present time. ;
Business Conditions Slow
He explained: Business condi
tions are slow, which has resulted
in fewer person being employed.
The bean harvest is in full swin?
and no serious troubles in secur
ing pickers has been encountered
as yet. The majority of the open
ings that become available from
time to time are of replacement
in nature rather that new jobs.
Foster fiakl retail and wholesale
trade has felt the effects of in
come losses. He said the fact has
been indicated from employers to
the field.
The effect may b prolonged.
Foster foresees far - reaching eco
nomic consequence in the in
ability of some lumber firms to
cold deck enough logs for a full
winter's consumption.
The total of unemployed persons
!n the county didn't increase dur
ing Jly, Foster related. Esti
mates of the number of unemploy
ed, which included those on strike,
dropped about 20 per cent from
June.
Unemployment Above 195
Exclusive of those involved in
labor disputes, the unemployed
totals are about 70 per cent high
er man tor toe same period last
year. This condition Foster attri-
buted largely to the beginning of
a new unemployment ncnent year
and the slowdown of business con
ditions resulting from the strike.
inose looicing for jobs, said the
employment manager, will find
available job openings are stead
ily decreasinz in number as the
lumber strike is prolonged. When
the matter is settled, the general
belief is that many jobs will be
come available, tie explained.
At the present time, there is a
demand for bean pickers and a
few openings in semi-skilled oc
cupations in the construction and
lumber industries.
The bean harvest will be follo'v
ed by the picking of pears, prunes
ana walnuts, but those activities
won't require a large number of
workers to get the job done.
